Inquiring Minds :)

Hello Gents,

This topic is on the categorization of the hundreds of file folders we end up with
once we unzip these downloads. Oh yeah.. and if you repaint, theres a bit more. :o

I'm sure alot of you probably store that stuff on a memory stick or something. The
real problem is categorizing all the files. you got: jets, props, vintage, gen-aviation,
classic warbirds.... and then all the authors. Plus all the stuff like gauges, utilities,
scenery, sound files, and so on. If you repaint..you got a whole other can of worms
to categorize.

I've got what I 'think' is a good system for this, but i'm running into some storage
capacity and search issues.

I would like to know some of your systems for this. This isn't really a problem as
much as it is a curiosity

I used to have about a hundred planes installed; maybe as many as 130. I was using XP then on this machine, but with a slower four-core chip. I now use Win 7 and I find I can't install planes anywhere hear as easily as with XP. So there are many, many fewer chariots available to me than in the old days. I can't repaint. It's beyond my technical ability. I have the abacus CD, but never got anywhere with it. Win 7 beats XP but for me, it's surely limiting the planes I can install. For one, the Stratojet Merlin confounds me. I have tried umpteen times to get the mostly-white Independence texture installed. Can't do it. I had Boikat's mostly-black SR-71 repaint of the Merlin running fine in the XP days. No dice on this machine. I try to install them as I always did, but they just don't seem to "make it" and they don't show up in the listing of availables. Very frustrating. So when you don't have a ton of birds, storing them is not a problem. The problem is you don't have a ton of birds...

How is installing aircraft in Win7 any different than installing in XP?

If you don't have absolutely perfect administrator access, the OS will sometimes refuse to recognize files you add to the sim, especially if FS is located in any of the Program Files folders.  They will be there, but not recognized by FS...
