Never seen this before...

Haven't fired up FS in a long, long time. Just tried it. Seemed to start normally. Then when it got to the screen that has you select which aircraft, et cetera, it flickered like crazy against a black background. I have been using FS2004 for maybe five years. I have never seen this before, even after having the machine off and/or unplugged for days and days. What is the problem? Thanks...

Brewer.... :)...!

Have you tried shutting the Sim down, letting it cool off, then restarting it again....

..or...

Shutting the whole computer down, waiting for a while, restarting it, and reloading the Sim again...?

Sometimes, things get confused and corrupted...

Paul...I get confused sometimes...but never corrupted.. 8-)...!

Nothing substantive has been changed in months and months on this computer. Video is flawless in every other application. I saw this phenomenon today when I started FS for the first time in many, many weeks. I have tried to pull out of the flickering sim, but I have to use Ctrl-Alt-Del and actually log-out of Windows 7 to get away from it. I NEVER log-off of this computer. I'm the only user; no reason to do so. Flummoxed...

when was the last time you opened up the case (if able) and took a good can or 4 of air to it?

...just as an aside, Brewer... ;)....
To exit from a troublesome program, do a Ctrl+ Alt+Delete like you did, Task Manager, select FS9.exe (or whatever) and select "End Process". This should take you back to the Desktop.
This will save you from Logging out of Windows, which I never do....I'm the only User as well!.... ;)...!
As for the FS9 screen flickering, I am stumped on that one for the mo'... :'(...
It seems like the Sim is trying to perform two different operations (alternately) at the same time!

Paul.

I think I have figgered it out. The 28-inch monitor referenced below took a dump. It is an HDMI interface kind o' thing. I am back to using my old 22-inch Westin'house, which I think uses an SVGA interface. I have not tried to adjust the monitor yet; just came to me as I was turning the thing off last night. I have been at work all night. Must go to bed. Exhausted beyond words...

I recall now that this older monitor is a DVI interface. I tried fiddling with the buttons on the back. Pretty sure I am using the correct cable. Fiddled and no luck. Still flickering. The screen is black, except for the window in which you select the airplane. The window within the window where the airplane revolves is black. I'm gettin' nowhere. Do not want to install again because I am afraid I will have to install all my add-on scenery again, right? Hope not. Takes an eon. Frustrating...

Hello Brewer... ;)...

As you only seem to get the problem when it comes to the "Aircraft Selection" screen, I am wondering if you have a dodgy aircraft in your latest default preference, loading screen.
Have you tried deleting your fs9.cfg File, and letting it build a new one on start-up, with the default FS9 Default Aircraft, etc, displayed?
You may have a incompatible aircraft in your hangar which is causing problems on loading?

You know mine does this, but only when i use the 'command' key to return to the desktop (Imac) when i click on fs9 to go back to it i often just get the aircraft rotating round in the box without the blue aircraft selection, weather selection and so on showing.

If i click on anything it corrupts it even more and leaves 'traces' of itself all over the screen.

Only solution is to reboot fs9 i find. However, if i dont use the command key all is well, so it might be a Imac versus windows 7 problem rather than a screen/graphics card/ or anything else failure. But my Hard Drive is failing so i guess that wont be helping matters!

Im running a Radeon X1600 thingy-ma-bob.

No, Fozz, I've done none of that. Something about deleting the fs9.cfg file scares the willy off me. Everything worked super-fine until I radioed Center and got clearance to fire up FS9 with this older monitor. Now I'm running on one cylinder and lookin' for a big field with no cows or stone fences to complicate matters. I think I'll just hit the silk and let it auger in on its own...

Hello Brewer... :)...

That sounds like as good an idea as any.... ;)...!

In a crisis...jump out!... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]...!

...looks like more experimentation required... ;)...!

P.S... If your plane hits one of those Cows, ship me over a nice Beef Steak... ;)... ;)...!

I also think deleting the fs9.cfg file is a good idea. But, you don't need to actually trash it. Just renaming the file to fs9.cfg.backup (for example) will do the same thing. If nothing changes after running FS9, then delete the new fs9.cfg and rename the original .cfg file.

Within the fs9.cfg file is a description of your graphics card and the display resolution. I'm just guessing on this, but if the resolution listed is for your previous monitor, there may be a conflict with the monitor you're now using.

Give it a try.

Regards,
JerryH

That's certainly possible. I don't remember the resolution of either monitor, but I do know I ran them at maximum-- or as close to maximum as would work. It's been so long since I fooled wit this thing, I don't even remeber how to set it...

Hello Brewer... :)...!

I would still recommend having a go at deleting/renaming your fs9.cfg "Notepad" File, as suggested above....

Windows 7:
C > Users > You! > App Data > Roaming > Microsoft > FS9 > fs9.cfg

This will start the Sim again in its original default set-up again when you fire it up....
..it automatically builds a NEW fs9.cfg file for you!
It puts the default aircraft, your present hardware details, etc, back in place when you start up.....
...then once its up and running successfully, you can start looking for problems elsewhere, if they exist... ;)...!

Give it a go..Brewer...nothing to lose, and if you just "renamed" the fs9.cfg File, (Original fs9.cfg) you can always return it again if you wish... :)...!

eg:
fs9.cfg (new rebuilt file!).
Original fs9.cfg (old one). It will ignore this one because of the word "Original" inserted!
