Running FS9 from an external drive...?

Postby gypsymoth » Thu Aug 04, 2011 11:41 am

Can the above be done?

I've just had a request from someone who wants to show a WW2 airfield (RAF Ibsely) I've made.  I thought I could lend my backup drive for the event, but will it work satisfactorily?

Don't see why not. I am currently running FSX off of an USB external drive with satisfactory results.

cheers,

It can be done, however it won't run as well as one on an internal drive. I presume you're using USB 2.0 and you'll have limitations caused by that.
The other person would also need to have FS installed on their system in the same manner or it won't run used to various files FS pops on the system plus registry settings....

In the end I thought I'd just transfer it from the external drive to the laptop - fs9 already installed there so it'll be an incremental installation sort of.....I suppose!

if you move it from the EXTERNAL drive to the INTERNAL drive (cut/paste, or even copy/paste) you WILL have registry issues.

In the end I installed FS9 on his laptop & then GW3 & then copied & pasted mine to the new installation....seems to be running well apart from drops in frame rates sometimes ...the only real problem is his desktop colour needs seeing to  ::)
