Coastlines and more...

Postby jive1 » Thu May 19, 2011 3:32 am

I'm using FS2004 since it came out, I know several things about FS2004, but I've always wondered why coastlines are sometimes so terribly inaccurate.
Last time I flew over Algiers city in the north of Africa and looking at the area top down, I got this picture, see http://www.jive1.be/northafricaalgiers.jpg
Now, I have the Genesis 76,2m mesh, I have the 'algeri.zip' of Toni Agramont, and I have also both 'algicity.zip' and 'algiers7.zip' by Riad GHENIM. These latters are partly photographic textured sceneries. Apart from that I have no scenery which covers that area, except of course the original FS2004 scenery.
I wonder now again why I got pritty good quality of the coastline within the Algiers bay, and why not somewhat west and somewaht east of the bay. In fact I don't see no coastline anymore, I see only square looking areas of straight line coasts without any variation at all.....
Something must surely not fit between these sceneries, which results then in a picture as shown with the link.
I tried moving up or down any of the mentioned sceneries by using FSNavDBC device, but nothing really helps....
The same thing happens in other parts of the world, and real coastlines desappear, whereas in other parts of the world I got coastlines as if they were made with 10m Genesis mesh...
Why is this so, and how can I improve these things.

While FS9's default coastlines are indeed approximated (and FSX is not that much better either), the effect seen in your picture is nowhere to be found on mine, and this bespeaks of probable problems in your default scenery. It seems that some of the definitions of your coastlines were completely lost.

You could try installing a fresh FS9 on another drive or even PC and then copy over in you actual FS9 the fresh Scenery folder and see if it works.

Hey!
I was experimenting still after I posed my question....
Now I saw that my 'default terrain' was UNDER the Genesis Mesh files, and I switched them, ie. I moved the Default Terrain above these mesh files, and now it seems solved. I can see now the coast of North Africa like it should be seen...
Since I'm not english languaged, I speek dutch, sometimes te exact meaning of an english word escapes to me. Some of these words that simmers use like 'terrain' or 'mesh' or even a combination of both words where as well 'terrain' and 'mesh' are used to explain one and the same thing, and some simmers dare to speak about 'terrain mesh'.... Apparently some of them mean the same thing, but also apparently some use these words not to say the same thing... It's confusing sometimes to me. So what exactly is the differense between default terrain and a mesh? Why must default Terrain ( mesh???? ) be above the genesis mesh files?

My "Default Terrain" voice is the absolute last of the Scenery list and never had problems. Have UTE, a whole world mesh and even a whole world landclass and never had your problem. ???

No idea of the reasons your FS9 wants that voice moved above some others. :-/
