The most likely thing, and the easiest to fix, is that the size of your virtual memory cache (a portion of the hard drive set aside for RAM functions, also known as "system RAM") is not large enough. FS9 has an error message specific to this, but sometimes it just says "memory", not "virtual memory."

Next possibility is that your RAM chips are not up to the job. The recommended minimum is not always good enough, especially if you have added scenery and other things.

Which leads to the next thing: you may have an add-on that is not installed/working correctly (aside from the possibility that is just needs more virtual memory).

Depends on what operating system you are using. Try a Google search for "increase virtual memory cache for (your operating system)"; it's not a complicated process.

However, don't be greedy- try increasing it just a little at first. No point in using hard much drive space for that if you don't really need to.

If that doesn't seem to do the trick after a small increase, consider your "outboard" RAM... FS9 will work OK most of the time with a little less than 1GB of RAM, but if you have more than 1 GB, it works much better, even when you start adding stuff to the sim, which can increase the burden.

If you are sure you have plenty of RAM, look at your add-ons, if any (aircraft, scenery, terrain mesh, etc)... there may be a problem with one of them.

Have a look at one of Nick's posts here. About half way down the page, he addresses OOM errors.

It says the tweak is for use with FSX, but it's a system setting change, not a sim setting change, so it should still apply.

You didn't mention anything about your system. If this only occurs now & then chances are you could use a memory upgrade or simply make sure you close other applications before start FS9 :)
