ok, this is for those of you who HAVE Win7 (any service pack - if there are any), and have FS9 running on that system.

My Cousin just got a brand new HP laptop with Win7 on it for Christmas and he was asking me if I would put FS9 on his computer. (computer specs - http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product. ... ductDetail )

I am 100% sure that it can be run on his computer by seeing all of yours run it, but some things that I need to know before I take the time to attempt to add it are::

• Does the UAC in Win7 need to be deactivated like it does in WIN VISTA?
  
• When I install it to the C:/Program Files (sorry, im use to XP), is there anything else that I should be aware of when installing?
  
• Is this system good enough to be able to run FS9 at least at 1/2 Power // or Maxed out?

He will have very little addon's maybe 5-10 extra planes, and Default Basic Scenery. (he's only 9 and doesn't NEED all the bells/whistles that us older boys need to make ours look

Not sure about the power settings, but the install for W7 works fine - put in disc one and off she went...no problems with installalation

so hopefully about the same as it was for XP.  Just pop it in, and away she goes.  I know that VISTA had its problems with the UAC and not being able to save .txt/.cfg files properly unless you turn off the UAC.  i just didnt know if the same had to be done in 7 or if micro$oft fixed that problem.

I'm running FS2004 under Windows 7. I've found that changes I make to FS9.cfg don't stick, even with the UAC off and all the permissions set to allow changes from C:\ down to FS9.cfg. I can click past the "Sound-files not found" dialog box, and the only airplane it affects, Mike Stone's C-46, works fine anyway. Other than that little glitch, FS runs great under Win7, default aircraft and free downloads.

I've seen suggestions to install FS in a folder other-than C:\Program Files (say, C:\FltSim). Mine's installed in C:\Program Files.

If anyone else has had the same problem I'm having, please let me know how you solved it.

I have read many posts on this subject and virtually all say that you should install it somewhere other than under Program files.  Many just use C:\Games or something similar.

Also many turn off the Win 7 version of UAC too.

is there any difference in run-ability if you disable the UAC? My cousin will be the only person to really use the computer, so he wont be using the "Fast User Switching" feature anyways so....

UAC - as I understand it - is a built in "safeguard" to keep the user from making dumb mistakes.  It may do other things too but most folks seem to consider a pain in the rear end when it will not allow you to makes edits etc. as we all do in FS.

I would turn it off while the install is done and then it could be turned back on I suppose.

In any case be sure to run everything as adminstrator.

I highly recommend installing FS9 in its own folder, such as...

C:\FS9

There's absolutely NO good reason to use the rediculously long default path, and MANY good reasons to avoid ..\Program Files like the plague it is...
