Today I decided to try recording videos in FS2004 with FRAPS, so I could edit them later. How do I properly program FRAPS so that my videos are high quality, and don't have a rainbow of colors flashing on the screen.

Hmm, I haven't seen that kind of effect in FRAPS. Did the original display show the streaking or did that just turn up on the FRAPS recording? If the latter, FRAPS might be having an issue with your graphics card? Just a thought - anybody else have any thoughts?

When I record, everything is fine, but when I go back and view the video, or edit it, it displays the colors. (The screenshot I posted was taken while viewing the video.)

what program are you using to playback your FRAPS video?

when i made my 2 videos, i used Windows Movie Maker (standard with XP Home).   There might be a problem with your PLAYBACK view (Windows Movie Maker), and not so much with FRAPS.

I've viewed it in Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic. I use Windows Movie Maker on XP Home as well.

HughesMD, I use the same Fraps?MM method and I've never seen anything like that (thankfully).

Do the odd colours appear in the original Fraps videos, or in Moviemaker after you have edited and saved the video? As you probably know, you can call up Fraps stuff independently by calling it up on 'My Computer/C Drive'; if you then click on the saved clips in the Fraps file Media Player will play them independently, without going through MovieMaker.

That way you can find out which program has the problem - at the moment it could be either.

Other possibilities are to check your settings in both programs. I find that a frame-rate of about 25 is all Fraps can achieve in FS2004.

The other thing is that MovieMaker uses a heck of a lot of memory. What settings are you using? One tip is, there's no need to use the standard 'Best quality for my computer' save quality, 'good quality video (large)' is quite good enough and the fliles are smaller. Another, of course, is to do a 'defragment' and registry clean.

Lots more suggestions we could make but the first essential is to know whether the problem is in Fraps or MM.  

Before the movies are edited (being viewed), when they are being edited, etc.

I take that to mean that the scrambled colours appear in the 'raw' Fraps footage. So MM is not likely to be the culprit?

First thing to try is to un-install and re-install Fraps. If that doesn't help, look at ypur Fraps 'settings.' The Fraps Readme says that, if you're using MM, you should not seek to record stuff at a higher resolution than 800X600.

I can do videos fine at my normal resolution (1152X864) but the frame-rate is poor and the files take ages to save. The solution was to set the Fraps resolution to 'half-size.' Another recommendation is not just to accept MM's default setting of 'Best quality for my computer' before you save; click on 'Other choices' and set 'Good-quality video (large).' Those changes have a very slight effect on picture quality but triggering Fraps causes no drop in FS frame-rates and the files save in seconds rather than minutes.

If none of those things helps, guess you may have a video card problem or you're short of memory?
