Scenery library problems

Postby sonic » Wed Apr 22, 2009 10:54 pm

I've never had a problem with adding scenery but all of a sudden I cant get anything added.
For example Fly Tampa's Boston Logon I put the folder named boston containing the scenery and texture folder into the add on scenery folder.
Launch Fs9 click sceneric library, Add area, go to addon scenery, click the Boston folder Leave use direct checked. Then click Ok but it always goes into the folder showing the 2 folders inside.
But it never gets added to the list.
Any ideas.

Which version of this scenery do you have? I finally found the Freeware release after a search round. The file name is bostonv2.zip. It comes complete with an auto-installer which installs a folder named Boston-Logan2 to your FS9\Addon Scenery folder. There is also an option to add it to Scenery.cfg but this didn't work for me. However, I had no problems adding it manually via the Scenery Library in the usual way.

It might also depend on how much addon scenery you have installed. I believe there is a limit to the number of entries Scenery.cfg can handle although I've never come close to it.

By all means use the freeware version. Excellent work by George.

FYI - did you actually check the contents of the scenery subfolder?

FS2004 will not accept a scenery entry unless there is at least one valid bgl in the scenery subfolder of any entry.

Yes I checked the sub folder there alot of .bgl in the scenery folder and alot of .bmps in the texture folder. I only have right now 45 entries in the scenery.cfg.
It still wont add I have several freeware scenerys I installed at the same time But most could not be added  to the .cfg with the installer becuase CFGedit is 16 bit and wont run on a 64 bit os.
So I fiqured I could just add them manually, they were installed to the add on scenery folder like normal but I just cant add them manually

To recap The scenery folder's are located in the addon scenery folder and each one contains 2 folders Scenery,and textures. I managed to get some installed after trying several times but most just wont do anything at all.

When you clicked ONCE on the scenery folder, did the following appear....>>>

If the "Select Scenery Directory" entry appeared in the Directory box, press "OK" and it should work.

From your OP:
Launch Fs9 click sceneric library, Add area, go to addon scenery, click the Boston folder Leave use direct checked. Then click Ok but it always goes into the folder showing the 2 folders inside.

This result indicates that it's not finding a 'legal' scenery sub folder directly beneath Boston. Can be caused by no .bgls inside or 'scenery' misspelled (case is not important).

CfgEdit is Panel editing software & will be no help with this problem. Open Scenery.cfg with Notepad if you wish to edit it manually

thats what the installer used I think to edit becuase when I launch the installer as it gets near the end it gives me a error that the CFG edit is 16 bit and wont work on a 64 bit version of windows. So I fiqured I could add it to the library manually.

If the "Select Scenery Directory" entry appeared in the Directory box, press "OK" and it should work.

Yes the add scenery folder appeard and I clicked add on scenery. When I click Ok it shows the Scenery texture folder inside the parent boston folder.

I am not sure there legal

Ah I see. It's not referring to the software named CfgEdit. It means the automatic edit of Scenery.cfg during install. If it's any consolation the cfg edit didn't work for me either but I didn't get an error message.

If you used the auto-installer the Boston scenery should be installed correctly. Did you check to see if Scenery.cfg is Read Only?

Have you tried manually editing Scenery.cfg in Notepad?

Find Scenery.cfg in your FS9 root folder. First of all make a backup copy of it in case anything goes wrong.

Then Right-click on Scenery.cfg & select Open With from the drop-down menu. Choose Notepad from the list of programs. It should then open in Notepad.

Scroll down to the bottom of the text & add the new area directly below the last entry. This is what mine looks like. (Note that the numbers in Red will be the next numbers in sequence after the previous entry. The Local= line is the path to the parent folder of the new scenery area. The folder name must be correct.)

[Area.042]
Title=Boston-Logan2
Local=Addon Scenery\Boston-Logan2
Remote=
Active=TRUE
Required=FALSE
Layer=42

When that's done exit Notepad saving changes when prompted. Now fire up FS9 & try it.

OK. Good luck. Make sure you take that backup copy first. You can copy the new entry from my reply & paste it in. Change the numbers to the next in sequence & make sure the path is correct.

If you get an error message the next time you start FS9 you either made a mistake in the CFG edit or didn't install the scenery correctly.

No, never. I don't usually recommend the manual edit as it should be much easier & safer to use the Scenery Library. If the scenery is installed correctly I have no idea what would cause your problem.

PS. I just tried activating a dummy scenery area with no BGL files in the Scenery sub-folder via the Scenery Library. This opened the parent folder as you describe. It proves that dave3cu was correct & you haven't installed that scenery properly. If you used the auto-installer for the Boston Logan scenery I can't make this out. Perhaps it has something to do with your 64 bit OS. How long have you had it?
