Stupid mistake while installing F/S patch,HELP.

Postby Dobermann » Sun Mar 29, 2009 11:30 am

My problem is I've made a stupid error when downloading F/S patch 9:1,
I missed directing download to Flight Sim 9, the result was some files downloaded to My Documents, I suspected trouble so I checked from the menu in Flight Sim and it states the I have "Version 9-00, Build 30612-02" I then decided to try a second time to install, but I was told that patch it was already installed and directed to abort attempt

Is it advisable to uninstall patch, I'm concerned that might not completely remove all, and give more trouble, seeing I didn't get files in correct places to start with, which in turn could hinder any future removal of the entire game from computer should it be needed. The uninstaller was downloaded to My Documents, including several other files, I copied files to Flight Sim 9, but not sure I have found all the files not knowing what they look like, or indeed put them in the right places.

There must be a way of checking on screen if those bridges are installed or not. Checking Scenery in game  shows Addon Scenery at top of list, and the game showed scenery change on initial startup if that gives any indication.

The simulator seems to run O.K. no problems at present. I run the Windows X.P. 3.

Any advice is more than welcome, as I said my concern is being able to uninstall entire game if needed at any time, as I've read that is not always a simple operation anyway.

If the 9.1 patch completed the proper installation a folder named BACKUP would have been created in your Flight Simulator 9 folder.

When you attempt to install it again, the patch looks for the presence of this folder and if found, tells you it is already installed.

If you find you have this folder (BACKUP) move it out of FS to a safe location and try the install again.

Be sure you run the exe file from your Flight Simulator 9 folder (not from some other location).

The patch will also create an uninstall file named FS9UpdateUninstall.exe in that same folder.

If you ever want to uninstall the patch, run the uninstall routine - and it will restore the files which have been saved in the BACKUP folder.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for your reply OPA, there is indeed a BACKUP file in the F/S 9 folder.

It looks a straight forward proceedure, except for the sentence "Run the "EXE" file from Flight Simulator 9 folder", would that be F/S9(with aeroplane icon) file which starts the simulator running in that folder, its the "EXE" thats thrown me.

I apologise for my ignorance, but the terminology you chaps use is still quite new to me.

Still can't understand why "Version 9-00" is still being shown and not "Version 9-1"in the Flight Simulator menu.

Regards.

Terminology can be problematic from time to time - for all of us.

When I said the "exe" I was refrerring to the actual update patch which is named fs91upd.exe.  After you download it, it should be copied or moved into your Flight Simulator 9 folder and run from that location.

You can use "My Computer" to navigate to it's location.

If the Help/About option is still showing Ver 9 then you do not have a proper install of the patch. It will read Ver 9.1. when properly patched.

Be sure to use the uninstall routine prior to try to install it again.  That file is named FS9UpdateUninstall.exe and should be in your Flight Simulator 9 folder.

Hope that clarifies things a bit.   ::)

Have tried to uninstall the said patch by using the twin bridge "FS9UpdateUninstall Icon" situated in the Flight Sim 9 page, but this message appeared:- "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item".

So how can it be removed, if I try to uninstall "Flight Simulator 2004" will the patch give me more problems, am I right in thinking all addons need to be removed first.

Is it possible to run update again, subject to removing "BACKUP" file first as suggested, will it over-write the the first installation where required.

Flight Sim still runs O.K., but I was hoping to benefit from the improvments the patch has to offer. If there is any danger of completely ruining Flight Simulator beyond use, I will have to reluctantly leave things as they are.

It sounds as if you are running Vista and you do not have "permission" to do what you are trying to do.

If so, turn off the UAC and try again.

To do that go your Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts and turn off UAC (User Account Control).

You may wish to turn it back on after getting things sorted out.
