Hi,

How can you plan for what runway number you want to land on prior to getting to the airport? I noticed that on the gps  you can see the runway numbers of the airport closer to you but that's hard to plan with. Also it's hard to orient yourself with that...

Any tips for this task?

1. download charts and print them out.

Check the ATIS or AWOS prior to arrival. An ATIS should state what runway(s) is/are in use at the time. If you are using a weather reporting system that does not give the active runway info to you, just know the current wind conditions. That should give you a clear indication of what the active is.

You have to be careful using this method as the ATIS can change often in a short time frame. While I worked at KJAX I watched a Delta B767 start taxi to run way 7. He had not got very far when he was told to go to runway 25 so he had to turn around, and just before he got to runway 25 he was told to go to runway 13. All of this took place in a matter of 10 minutes or so 8-)
