My login is 'olderndirt' and I may also be 'dumber than' but, though I've looked for a answer on my copy, I need to know why, on all the 'select a flights' there doesn't apear to be a runway, only buildings.

First, let me state my foot is barely on the first rung.

When you say 'select a flight' I am guessing you are not using the create a flight tab.
These are the 'mission' style flights in FS9 and most start off in various situations. It sounds like the particular one you mentioned is starting you in a parking spot.

Try the 'create a flight option' These will always start you on the active runway at the airport of your choosing, or if you wish, you can select to start at a gate or parking ramp.

a handy little tool that a friend of mine recommended is this site here:
www.airnav.com
It has maps and Information on every US or US Territory airport. Useful if you want to do very realistic IFR flights in FS.

Hope this helps.

If you're starting from a parking spot at the airport check the ATC box after you have contacted ground to taxi.  There should be an option to activate "Progressive Taxi" which will plant a purple set of arrows on the taxiway that lead you in the direction that ATC has told you to follow.

You also may want to study the symbolic variances in the various signs on the airport property. (Taxiway signs, runway signs.)

When getting ready to taxi out, copy down on a notepad what taxi directions ATC gives you, and simply follow the proper signs. You should have no problems getting to the runway.

olderndirt,

Note that the above post should read "SLEW" not "sKew".

olderndirt, looks like you're basically starting from the wrong place!

Sure, there are a number of pre-prepared flights that you can try later (lots of them are fun) - but the beauty of FS is that you can set up your own flights! By going to 'Create A Flight' you'll find that you can set up a flight at any airport you like, at whatever time you like; and that you can also organise it to start from the 'Active Runway.' Then you can save that particular flight and call it up again any time you like.

Also, have a look at 'Getting Started' on the Menu on the left - it's not perfect but it will give you a lot of basic information. Also, as Opa suggests, do the first few 'Flying Lessons,' they don't take long and they'll get you off on the right foot.

The good thing - probably the best thing - about FS is that it is genuinely a 'simulator,' not a game. You have to learn to 'fly,' not just play; even if you've previously flown the real thing :).

Also use the "Learning Centre' - it's full of information (maybe TOO full!) but it covers most things. One tip, use the Index for specific subjects, don't just try to read it from end to end!

Hope all that helps.

If I'd been as ham-handed with an airplane as I am with FS9, I wouldn't be here making this post.

Be sure you "calibrate" your joystick using the dialogue in FS - that may fixes a number of issues.

A big part of the problem was 'sensitivity setting'.
