High building collisions

Postby avoidz » Mon Jan 12, 2009 11:42 pm

Hi,

A friend of mine is playing FS9 and trying to land helicopters on high buildings (e.g. Downtown L.A.), but the tallest buildings don't seem to have any collision detection, while smaller, lower buildings do.

It occurred to me that since Flight Simulator was somewhat censored following 9/11 (i.e. crashes and aircraft damage disabled) that buildings over a certain height in the game might have had the collision detection disabled as well.

If this is true, is there a way to re-enable the collisions so it's possible to land atop high buildings again?

Cheers  :)

I believe not all buildings do have the collision removed so there landable, one thing you could try is searching for a addon for the are you are looking for, ive seen quite a few addons for landable buildings in chicago.

It isn't a matter of collision detection or 911.

It's whether the flat roof is 'hardened' in the model, making them landable, or not. The flat roofs on most generic buildings, including skyscrapers, are 'hardened'. The roofs on most custom buildings, like those in the cluster in downtown LA, are not.

Hint: to see if a roof is landable before 'crashing' thru it, fly or hover over it. If you see the aircraft shadow, it's landable.....no shadow, it's not.

The easiest fix is to use a library object placer program, like Rwy12, to place a 'hardened' surface, like a concrete or raised helipad, on the building.

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

Or use AFCAD as shown in this tutorial to harden the roof.
