Stopping midflight updates of scenery/traffic?

Postby Stewy44 » Thu Jan 08, 2009 10:55 pm

G'day guys,

Just a quick question, just recently, FS9 will do the "updating scenery/traffic" sliding bar mid flight.

It only happens for a split second, but for some reason, my flight clock gets ruined and for some other weird reason, I don't receive a gate or parking bay when I land - it just goes between "taxi to parking options" and then when I click it, it goes to "taxi to takeoff options"

When I look at the map, there is a little ">" mark where the update happened and it looks as if that's there the flight began, not my departure airport...

Is there any way to stop this?

Easy bit first, Stewy44 - some smaller airports don't have ground control - you just have to find your own way. Go to outside view and have a good look around - or use the Map View, enlarged - or press 'Shift-]' for a plan view of the airport (']' to cancel) - and park where you think best.

As to an '"updating scenery/traffic" sliding bar,' for my part I've never seen that feature on FS9? Have you downloaded any add-on scenery packages lately?

Thanks Nav for your help :)

Yep, was at a major airport (Sydney) with gates, but no option came up on the ATC menu to request a gate.

No, just using plain vanilla FS9 scenery.  I'll keep testing and see if it keeps doing it.

Thanks for your help :)

Don't seem to have helped much so far, Stew. :)

You may just have 'lost contact' with ATC - I've done that once or twice, usually by failing to acknowledge a handoff. So the Tower won't 'hand you off' to Ground Control because it doesn't 'know' you're there. The solution (if, like me, you're in the habit of saving flights and then starting again from the same location, time etc.) is to set up a 'new' flight.

As to the time getting scrambled, this often happens in FS9, very possibly it's not the same problem. The only solution to the time-change problem is to make notes at the beginning and end of each flight, and check and if necessary correct the time occasionally while you're in flight. You SHOULD find, though, that it's the date that tends to change, not the actual time. One tip - take a note of Zulu Time (GMT) as well as local time, it could just be that you're crossing into a different timezone. That often happens in Oz, Adelaide is half an hour behind Melbourne and Sydney and Perth is a full two hours back.

Still mystified by the scenery thing. Only thing I can suggest is to delete your FS9.cfg file and let the game build you a new one next time it starts up. Details on how to do that in a thread at the top of FAQ's.

Cheers, Nav, that's good advice!  I'll get rid of the saved flights and have a new .cfg made up :)

Thanks mate

Thanks Nav, that fixed it mate - deleted fs9.cfg and returned the default flight to the Cessna at Seattle and it's all good again! :D

Thanks for all of your help, Nav! :)

Great, Stew, hope it stays 'sorted out'!

One other tip I can offer, about 'checking in. Flying VFR, there is a way in which you can avoid the tiresome business of 'checking in' with ATC.

When ATC says, "Snooks 35, contact Muggins Control on 111.1," press "Acknowledge Hand-off." A screen will come up offering "Contact Muggins Control."

Then just don't contact them. You'll find that the game will automatically 'refresh' the ATC areas as you pass through them. When you're close to your destination, contact whichever Control is shown on the screen and you'll be back in normal contact.

Saves a lot of hassle.
