Quad City Challenger II Ultralight...

Hi, I love flying this relaxing ultralight, but I keep getting the (I think) engine failure very soon after taking off.

The instructions that come with it say to keep the RPM below 6000 as often as possible and out of the red.

Is there a way to disable the engine failure on this model? Maybe in the aircraft.cfg somewhere?

Cheers :D

I'll have to d/l it again to see, but I can't remember ever having an engine failure. Are you adjusting your mixture correctly when climbing? The engine could be starving out. I'll go get it and check it over in the meantime. :)

Edit: Whoops, looks like I have to eat some words here; it looks like Bill modeled mixture control out of the aircraft, I'd forgotten that. I'm not sure - I couldn't make the engine quit at all! I'll check out the air files first thing in the morning but knowing Bill; that function will be hardcoded into the model itself.

Hi. I hit F4 for full power and keep it there for quite a while, and maybe that's why the engine keeps failing on me.

The instructions that come with it says:

This aircraft has engine damage modeled into it so if you run in the red on the temp gauge for too long it will FAIL!! Try to keep it cool by keeping rpms at 6000 or below most of time!

I was just wondering if it was possible to modify the aircraft settings and prevent the failures from happening.

Cheers :D

Thanks. If you find anything, please let me know :)

Otherwise, I'll just have to fly a bit slower.

While you feel the need, the need for speed, I feel the need for... sightseeing - and easy landings :D

Avoidz:
Like I thought; the engine failure is either incorporated into the model or in the engine temp. gauge. Either way, I can't adjust it and frankly; I'm not really inclined to - the QCC2 is a lovely little ship and little bits of reality like that really enhance the experience, IMO.

(Yes - I'm known for tweaking planes, but I usually leave Bill Lyons' work alone - I've rarely found anything to tweak on his planes that actually makes 'em better - they're perfect right out of the crate! ;D )

If you want to fly a bit faster, here's a little tweak that can help though - note that I'm not recommending this 'cause it takes from the realism a bit but if you want to, here's how to do it:
Open the aircraft'.cfg file, and scroll down to the [Flight Tuning] heading.
Change the Parasite Drag variable from 1.0 to 0.75 - that allows the ship to fly a bit faster (75kias@2000') while leaving the slow-flight characteristics largely untouched. Save, and off you go. :)

I tried it with an utterly lovely flight from Lake Hood (4S2) to Seattle by way of Mt. St. Helens, then replaced the original specs and flew back - the extra ten minutes were, IMO worth the slower cruise but I can certainly appreciate the interest in flying a bit faster. ;)

Hope this helps!

(P.S. - thanks for reminding me of this lovely little ship. Flying it with Active Camera (which I just got around to buying) is utter magic. Really - I shoulda got AC years ago! ;D )
