You can change them but it is a lot of trial and error
Just open the panel cfg file of the plane in question and look for the following lines
[Color]
Day=255,255,255
Night=223,86,88
Luminous=246,115,119
The numbers are the colors.

I use this combination, it gives a nice green, easy on the eyes.

[Color]
Day=255,255,255
Night=255,255,255
Luminous=190,255,190

It's been awhile since I've done this, I think the "Luminous" line controls the night panel lighting.  I forget exactly what the "Day" & "Night" lines control.

The numbers indicate levels of RED, GREEN, & BLUE in that order:

190 (red), 255 (green), 190 (blue)

The higher the number, the greater level of that color in the mix.
Pure white is 255,255,255, solid black is 0,0,0.

If you have a photo edit program, or even Excel or I think Word, you can experiment with the color pallates to get exactly what you want.

Instead of backing up the file, you can just use "//" to indicate lines that should NOT be read by the program, and enter the new line like this:

[Color]
Day=255,255,255
Night=255,255,255
//Luminous=190,140,90
Luminous=190,255,190

That way you can easily go back to the original line if you don't like the resulting new colors.

Interesting..
I added some simicon buttons to my PSS Vulcan and they light up White while all the existing gauges and buttons are a sort of orangy red. What would I have to do to get them to match?

Zaphod,

Not difficult - just takes a few minutes. Assuming that the simicons are in a .cab file (mine are):
- extract the .xml files in the .cab file to a temporary folder
- open each individual .xml icon gauge file using right-click, and then 'open with' Notepad
- look for the following line (or one with a variant of the icon name) in each case:

and add extra text to make :

- close the file with the 'x' button, and save when prompted
- use cabdir.exe in the main fs9 folder to reassemble the .cab file - make sure it is named 'simicons.cab', just like the original
- back-up the original file and then copy the new .cab file where it needs to be

All you've done is told the gauges to use the 'luminous' numbers in the panel.cfg file, which means that they will illuminate like the other gauges. You don't need to make any changes to the .cfg files.

If you're not familiar with using cabdir, then you can use use CABpack (google for it) which adds an easy-to-use GUI to the program.

;)

OUTSTANDING!

Thanks Micro'. That really did the job.
Actually, it was easier than you described as all of my simicon .xml files are contained in a seperate "simicon" folder inside my main guages folder. All I did was opened them in Notepad and added the line you mentioned and Bob's your fathers brother.

Great.
Thanks for the help.

Zaphod ;)

Copy and paste the [Color] section for us so we can see exactly what it looks like.  Show us the before and after numbers if you can.

I'll run a test on my response later when I get home, or tomorrow when I have time.

I just followed my own instructions, it worked, nice, soft green gauges there, the "Luminous" line controls that.

We need your color section as I said, maybe then we can figure this out.

We didn't need the entire file, but that's OK.

I ran your exact color numbers line for line, it renders a rather pleasant light yellow shade.  Everything is entered correctly, so I dunno what else we can do, it's really as simple as that.  You might try this on another aircraft, maybe it has something to do with the gauges.

Well, we gave it a good try.
