I'm getting a machine with a 2-core CPU just for FS9 (Overclocked Intel E8400 Core 2 Duo @ 3.6Ghz 6MB Cache 1333FSB CPU / Asus P5Q Pro Intel P45 Crossfire Motherboard / 9600 GT 512Mb / Corsair 4GB XMS2 PC6400 800Mhz Memory / 500Gb SATA Hard Drive / 22x DVD-RW) & they'll put an OS of choice in free so which would that be...Vista or XP??
I've only experienced XP so I'd be very glad of any advice!
I might get them to put a better card in tho'
Thanks.
Terry.

If it was me, and it was JUST for FS9 I would go with XPpro.
However if you eventually plan on putting in FSX I've heard that Vista64 edition is very nice.

Thanks for that!  Is Viasta64 OK for FS9 then as well?

Personally, I am a bit wary of changing over to Vista from my present Win XP Pro because much of my present Software, (Games and Utilities, etc), and Hardware is not suitable for running on Vista.

(Many suitable Drivers are not available)

It all depends on whether you are intending to only run present and future applications designed for Vista, or if you are concerned about your present software and hardware applications designed for Win XP only....I have many of them which I don't want to lose!..;)..!

(On some of my applications, Software and Hardware, I have to revert BACK to Win '98 SE!)

If you are just using the machine for FS9 only, I would get XP.  I just bought a new machine with Vista on it and some of my FS9 payware isnt compatible with Vista.  Vista is great and all, but I think XP is better for FS9.

I have been using Vista for about 3 weeks, My system is not that great e6300, 3gig 667, 8800gtOC 512. and the current guru3d nvidia drivers. and I must say FS9 plays a little smoother than it did on xp. As for fsX I havent jumped that hurddle yet all though I might in the next few days I have it just not installed. I didnt opt for 64 bit just yet.

I have similar/same specs and FS9 runs with lots of stutters and FSX runs really smooth....??? So I just play FSX really.

Thanks for suggestions.  In the end I'm getting this with Vista Home 64bit installed: AWD-IT GPC36: OVERCLOCKED Intel E8600 Core 2 Duo @ 4.0Ghz 6MB Cache 1333FSB CPU / Asus P5Q Pro Intel P45 Crossfire DDR2 Motherboard / ATI 4870 512Mb / OCZ 4GB DDR2 PC8500 1066Mhz Memory / 500Gb SATA Hard Drive / 22x DVD-RW.  If I don't like Vista I'll put XP in but thought I'd have a go at FSX first with Vista, as I've got FS9 in the laptop.  Fingers crossed  8-)

In my opinion, there isn't a really good reason to avoid vista any more. A lot of people are afraid of it because of the bad things they have heard, however, it is now nearly 3 years old, and many of the bugs are worked out. For the most part, everything that I had before on XP works just fine on Vista. Drivers are readily available for peripherals.  I've only had problems running one game, and one steering wheel that is now 10 years old.

In many cases, I've noticed that things run smoother on vista then XP. Sometimes you can get more FPS on XP with some stutters, and you loose a few FPS on vista but it runs smooth.

I think you made the right choice to try Vista. That's what I did and now I will never look back.

Thanks for your input.  I think the new machine should be here in 3 or 4 days so I'll update on how it goes.  As long as the Silverwings, & the weather & scenery & Alphasim aircraft addons work with FS9 I'll be happy.   I'll give FSX a shot first though.   8-)
