In real life I don't think pilots know a head of time. They offer you the runway because it is available. Approach can't tell you ahead of time because they don't know what type of traffic conditions might be there.
Set the approach function in the GPS to the runway you want and the type eof approach you want. Be sure you have the correct airport first.

Listen to the ATIS or AWOS service that the airport provides. If the airport does not have an automated weather service, then simply reference the current wind conditions at altitude, or a nearby airport with a weather service. When done with that, you can load, but not activate, the approach you are expecting into the default Garmins.
Also, look at your approach plates for your destination and set up the proper nav freqs and course headings to do an ILS or LOC approach, since in the sim, the guidance seems to be more accurate on final, unless the airport ONLY is GPS capable...which would be strange, but possible.

This is good advice.

Pilots can't know 'strictly' speaking ahead of time, but looking at the METAR for any given area is a massive clue, if NOSIG is present, and its only a short flight, chances are the runway in use at the time of the METAR will still be in use when you arrive, messages like 160v360 tell you it could be anything.
Plus, ATC don't decide runways based on traffic conditions, its winds, it's one of the most fundamental rules of aviation, even in FS, I'm surprised you didn't know that :-?

Agree with all this good advice. Use real-world weather, so you know which direction you're likely to be landing in, use ATIS and contact with airport tower to get the final runway.
My habit is not to use the built-in GPS (I often fly older planes such as 707 and 727 which have INS rather than GPS) but once within 30 miles or so, to confirm the runway and use local VORs to align - or use a parallel reverse track to the runway to make an interception with the localizer.

I take a quick look at the map, enlarge the airport several times and the runway numbers are clearly marked.

Well...if you didn't see it, then choose the option that says that you do not see the runway, and the FS ATC should have you execute a missed approach and bring you around again for a second try. You could also try asking for a specific type of approach rather than the visual if you wish.

No problem...

....
...just keep doing that until you run out of fuel...
...then you'll find you can land anywhere!... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]...!

APPROACH PLATES< AND AIRPORT DIAGRAMS AND AIRPORT FACILITY DIRECTORY.
FLIGHT PLAN
ATC
ATIS
8-)

If it is RNWY 34r, well your app is going to be from South East.
Only the first 400 are confusing the otheres are easy.
