Fixing the laser-edge horizon and shimmering

Postby ThomasKaira » Sat Jun 28, 2008 12:56 am

The jaggies are out of the equation, so now comes the next major graphical issues.

I would like some suggestions as to correcting the two titled events, considering they are both extremly annoying. :)

Only a suggestion.
First dump one of your 8800GT's.
Install nHancer.
Disable your multicores, thus running CPU as a single core.
If that works try putting back the 2nd 8800GT.

Oook, slow down there, tiger! :o :o :o

I'm trying to balance my system on a knife-edge here, and so any modifying the innards is out of the question (I also have a warranty I'd rather not void). :-X

nHancer is already installed, as well.

Don't have much time to explain now, but shimmering problems usually involve high mip-map display settings, try bumping that down to 4 or 5, or perhaps lower.

For the hard horizon issues, one way to solve it beyond customizing your weather variables is to download softhr07.zip from www.avsim.com.

Have a nice day!  :)

You must have edited your post else where would I get that info from.
Jet, I'm not joking here, anyways, leave the cards then but first make sure you have FPS set to at least 80, once the problems are all solved you can bring it down again if you want to.
FS9 does wierd things on multi processors hence the need to only use 1 core.
I have just checked my PC, if I enable the other core, I get shimmering if I look at a pole, a fence and stuff like that.
If I then set my FPS target to less than 40, fly open view (press w twice in cockpit view), in steep climb, set throttle at min, and when the plane starts to dive, watch the horizon and everything shakes and shudders very bad, set up the FPS to 80 and its smooth as silk.
Also as Sean says, check your Mip-Map although I'm sure thats the first thing you did.
I find a setting of 5 is great.

I agree with Sean - Soft Horizons is one of the best things I've done for FS9 - much more realistic horizons now.

I used soft horizons on my old PC as there I did not have the FPS to get past these issues but it made everything a little blurry which in that case I suppose was better.
Thing is I seem to remember it effected everything, terrain, plane edges the lot and not just the horizon, like an overdone anti-aliasing.
Anyway, Jet has an even more powerfull PC than what I have so he should have real superb graphics :)

** Edit **
mmm I eat my words regarding Soft Horizons, just installed it on my new PC and it sure works well and looks pretty good as well.
It gives you approx an 5 to 8 FPS advantage when pushing the stick up/down quite rapidly while watching the horizon and terrain regarding shimmering etc - nice ;)
