I presume you mean navigation using nav-aids such as VOR's & NDB's?
If so, have a look here:

If I'm understanding you right you mean being able to fly with the switch on nav rather than setting it on GPS? If that's what you mean I can't help you because I fly via the GPS until I'm coming in on approach then I look up the ILS freq for the runway I'm using and I usually fly the approach manually once I get that dialed in and pick up the glide slope.

Actually, I don't think anyone has answered his question precisely yet?...
On the instrument Panel there is a toggle switch which can be flicked between "NAV" and "GPS"...
Maybe he is asking what is the use and purpose of each position of the switch in aircraft navigation?

"Nav/GPS" refers to which navigational device you want the autopilot to reference for your heading (or approach procedure, in the case of GPS).
So... once you set up either a radio navaid or the GPS for navigation, before engaging the autopilot, you must put the switch in either "Nav" (which will slave the autopilot to Nav 1 -usually a VOR receiver) or "GPS" (which will slave the autopilot to the GPS).
