Airport VOR info question.

Postby gypsymoth » Sat Jan 12, 2008 6:13 pm

I'd be grateful if someone can tell me where can I get VOR info from.
Is there a web-site around to get it from or........?

Thanks,
TerryW.

"VOR info" is a pretty broad term... what info exactly are you looking for?

I have a friend who has installed an autoland gauge (I think it's better by hand!!) that requires the runway ILS & the airport VOR but he's stumped as to what is wanted.  I think it's the ground station VOR frequency but Map only shows the ILS frequency.   He could always ask the gauge creator but I said I'd ask here first where the knowledge is  :D

FSNav.com has Sale Closed on its site (?!) but he can play there as & when!

Autoland should only require ILS.
as on the VC10 also in real life.
The sim map shold show you any VOR's in thevicinity of the airport. They are rarely in line with the rwy and often quite some distance away.
(I think it's better by hand!!)

In real life if ATC vector you to "Establish" on the localisor you are required to make an ILS approach with AP engaged It's mandatory in the UK and Europe. You can ask for a visual approach. As you can in the sim but it is only granted if the weather is CAVOK and there is little traffic. So it is unrealistic to fly by hand in the sim unless traffic and weather conditions permit.

It's realistic to let the A/P fly the approach, but ONLY if the pilot had long since mastered flying the approach manually  ;)

Thanks.

1) What is your chosen VC10 Volo, please?   I have the Addictive.....!  I'm just being curious  8-)

2)  I usually, not being a REAL pilot (yet) have learned to fly my approaches by AP & then take over & land manually.

3)  Apparently this gauge needs ILS & VOR frequencies but checking Map I can't see nearby stations, as you say, so I don't understand the instructions.  I've asked my friend to ask the gauge creator!

I'm not sure how this gauge would work at an airport with an ILS but no VOR... has he tried it yet using only the ILS?

PS- I agree; landing by hand (not necessarily flying the approach to minimums by hand) is not only more fun, it's more realistic.

Not all airliners in real life have this capability, and it is generally used only for CAT III approaches or for the required practice autoland approaches.

Apologies for not replying sooner - busy, busy!!

Rather than messing with my chum's fs I have installed this gauge in my Mike Stone A380 to see if I can spend more time getting it to work.

The gauge is Martyn Becker's Autoland.v1 (p.7 Utilities here) & I flew from Exeter to Bournemouth in the UK.  I put in the ILS frequency for RW 8 (110.50) & was amazed to see it line up precisely but the aircraft kept to 3000 ft  instead of landing!!   The I've emailed the creator for advice but have had no reply so far.    If anyone here can help I'd be grateful.   I hate being thwarted  ;D

Possibly the ILS system did not have glideslope capability. (the horizontal line on your VOR indicator when established.)

Also, simply make sure you turned off altitude hold on the autopilot if equipped.  Or fly the approach under the NAV mode on your autopilot, not GPS, which should automatically disengage alt hold and follow the glideslope.
