Yep, you can change the files with success and bring order to your system. If you're a novice at this, I would suggest just changing only the "ui_manufacturer", "ui_type" & "ui_variation" at first, that will give you enough work to do for a little while. Once you get comfortable with that, you can tinker with changing the "title", "atc_id", "atc_parking_type" etc...

***IMPORTANT***: One thing you want to do FIRST is back up (make a copy of) your original, unmolested "Aircraft" folder and label the folder something like "Aircraft_Original", or whatever, and place the folder whereever is convenient... If you find that you have screwed things up beyond repair, you can just delete that "Aircraft" folder and copy the original and make that the new "Aircraft" folder.

*** A few items that you DO NOT want to change are: ***

#1) The "sim=", that is your link to the "air file", the names must match as originally downloaded.

#2) The actual "air file" name, again that can screw things up instantly.

*** A few things that are NOT detrimental, but will cause some havoc: ***

#1) On all the original aircraft, don't change the "Paint#" because you will lose those planes as AI (Artificial Intelligence) traffic - basically, the aircraft that are flying around you.

#2) Make sure the "texture=name" in the aircraft file matches the "texture.name" folder name, or that texture won't show up.

#3) Make sure the "title=" line is different for each aircraft or only one or neither will show up. For instance, if you have two simular planes: "title=C172 Blue Stripes"

I suspect you mean renaming the aircraft folders. This should not cause problems unless other aircraft are aliased to them. I wouldn't recommend modifying the default aircraft.

You can change an aircraft folder name anything you want, as long as nothing else is aliased to it - a panel, or sounds, etc. Then, the airplane trying to alias to the renamed folder will not have a panel or a sound, for instance.

The aircraft.cfg file is the real secret to order out of chaos. Others who have made comments are right.

One big mistake is the TITLE line in each [FLTSIM.X] entry; this is apparently what is used for the specific airplane and variation used when a flight is saved. If the title is changed or that specific [FLTSIM.X] is later deleted, calling up that saved flight will cause an error, and revert to the default flight. If it was already the default flight, some arcane measures must be taken to get FS9 running again!!
