Of course you can add flights even whole new lists to your flights library. ;)

Look at what's circled, notice how the two are exactly alike.

Have you manually made a copy of or renamed the original file for some reason?

The  flight names displayed are taken from inside the file, from the 'Title=xxxxxxx' line, not from the file name. When you save the flight the 'Title=xxxxx' line and the file name are taken from the 'Title of Flight' name given or selected.

If you manually rename the file, the 'Title=xxxxx' line doesn't change, so the next time you load then save the flight you'll end up with 2 files with the same 'Title=xxxxx' line.

('My Saved Flights' are located in ..\My Documents\Flight Simulator Files\.. The *.flt files can be viewed/edited with Notepad.)

Say what :-?
I do not see how you can have two files with the exact same names unless you change the file types in one of them so you could have
Test one.flt and
Test one.bak
But you would only see
Test one and
Test one
from the FS saved file menu as it does not show the extension
This is the only way that I know of to have two files with the same name thay have to be different types or have different extension. 8-)

Is this a legitimate problem or a joke?

If it is a joke it's pretty easy to duplicate.  If it's a legitimate problem I'll be glad to tell you the solution.  The easy is to just delete the "secondary" flight.

Ok what you are talking about is the way FS displays the saved flights and makes it look as if you have two files with the same name.
but in reality there has to be a differance somewhere and it is usually the extension or some times the system will make a duplicate file and put a number in parenthesis such as Flight and Flight(1) you would never see the (1) looking at the files using FS. This number is usually the result of using system restore. as it wil some times make a second copy of a file and it MUST have some way to distinguish the two so it uses the (1)
One thing for sure I know of no way to have two files with the exact same name and extension in a single folder.

Hah, still have repeat scenery names to choose from, ie.Meigs and Meigs

KCLT and KCLT all in the "Go To Airport" in FS9. And there are others.
I am running two FS9 on different drives. One as a test bed! Maybe this is the problem.
I do have masses of scenery going back to younger days. An infinite amount of textures available If you have any lost! :-[
