lol, sort of an awkward question to ask. Where in the settings can I change it so that I start without engines started/not on the tarmac. I'm sure its in there somewhere but if it is i can't remember for the life of me.
Thanks all!

No setting really, what you need to do is get your self situated when, where, and how you'd like to start out, then save the flight. Then when you choose that flight (or make it your default) , it will be as you saved it. i.e. cold and dark.

..just to add a little..
For Cold and Dark (everything off, engines not started)-create a flight, with your favorite aircraft, location and weather. Click Fly Now. Kill your engines and turn off all systems. Save the flight, but in the save flight window put a checkmark in the 'Make this the default flight' box before clicking OK. Exit the flight and from the Select a Flight list, select this flight and again put a checkmark in 'Make this the default flight' before clicking Fly Now.
From now on whenever you create a flight, any aircraft will start cold and dark. This will not change the status in any of your saved flights.
As for not starting on the runway, when in the Goto Airport window, once you select an airport

To add...
This 'feature' (a 'cold and dark' option would be much better) also causes on my computer that if I save a flight as default when the autopilot is on, the autopilot remains on in any subsequent flight in whatever plane until you save something else as the default.
Result: forgetting about your B737 autopilot flight save, you decide to start off in your C172 from the runway, engine already on, no checklist reading or anything technical like that, for a relaxing little pleasure flight - and as soon as you get airborne (or earlier) the plane veers sharply in a totally different direction uncompatible with the stage of flight - result = ploughing into the ground, all manner of interesting cartwheels, etc. :D
