New system= New issues

Well, Ive tried pretty much everything I can think of, so now look to you guys for some advise...

I just purchased this system (look in sig), thinking FS9 would rock on it... Not quite. My previous system (Sony, Pentium4 3GHZ, 2MB Ram, Nvidia 7600GS 512) handled FS nicely considering the number of addons I have (alot, and All settings to MAX). MY average FPS was CONSISTENTLY 10-12 in extremely dense areas, and CONSISTENTLY pegged at the target speed of 25 (+/- 3-4) in less dense areas.

Now, in the same areas, my FPS on this new "BEAST" is anywhere between 4 and 25 FPS, being below 10 about 90% of the time, and stutters like Hell. I have done all the proper maintenance and re-did Nicks tweaks (everything I did on my old PC), and no change. Needless to say, after 2 days of messing with this, I am both frustrated and Pissed. but Im sure there's a solution

Two thing to think about
How much RAM do you have
FS9 might not make use of the CPU quad cores the proper way. From what I have read while the speed of the cpu can make a difference the amount and speed of the RAM you have is even more important.
So even though you have a faster cpu you still need plenty of ram to help it out.
The term is THROUGHPUT the cpu can only go as fast as the RAM will let it. So if you went from 2megs of ram to only 1meg of ram even with the faster cpu speed it is being limited by the 1meg ram.

Make sure you havn't placed Texture_bandwidth_mult to a value any higher than 40. And two, does it only happen in specific areas? I get 0.02 FPS occasionally with Flight Scenery KPDX which really fustrates me, try flying in Africa or something?

Two theories:

The 3GB are definitly not the problem, but, hm, what type of DDR do you have?
Is it DDR, DDR2 or DDR3? Normally it should work on all,
but while DDR3 is used in graphic cards for years, it's pretty new for main RAM.
And new hardware that hasn't been some time on market often has compatibility problems.

Second one:

Maybe FS really can't handle a quad core or has just problems wih it like gary said.
If you don't have one, google for an instruction of how to set tasks to specific cores,
e.g. all windows proccesses to core 1 & 2, maybe icq, winamp and browser to core 3 and fs9.exe to core 4.

I read something about FS and multicores some months ago, but I am sure I remember that FS9 worked better if you assign it to ONE core and not to 2, 3 or 4.

It is 3GB DDR2, and I already tried assigning FS to One core (SEEMED to help, but the amount of improvement was negligable). Is the Nvidia 8500GT 256 a good card?

Could you please paste you .cfg file? I would like to look at it. Did you use the same hard drive that you had on your old pc?

Oops I missed the ram entry in your earlier post But I know that Microsoft just released a patch for FSX to solve the Multi core problem  for FSX, but FS9 has had no such patch. I think what might be happening is because you used your old system to install FS9 with, your new system does not quite know how to handle it. I could be wrong here but the only fix might be to uninstall and reinstall with your new system as the registry entries might be somewhat different. Of course I could be getting to technical here but it sounds logical. I really do not know that much about multi core processors. But being that FS9 was made for Pentium D's and the like a multi core processor might have problems with it and as a result have issues while running it. One other thing to think about is did you change operating system from XP to vista if so you might try using the compatibility means of running FSX 8-)

I have so many addons for FS9, I dont feel like starting over with FSX. This new system has windows Vista.

Dan, I'll post the cfg when I get home. Which cfg is it (stupid question)?

I may start by upgrading the memory on this system. Can anyone explain what I should look for when purchasing memory? I noticed when looking at them on Ebay, they have different rated speeds (MHZ) and different models. Which are the best ones?

Do a search for FS9.cfg. That's the one

Vista users can find the FS9.cfg in the following directory:

C:\Users\(Your Username Here)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FS9

Make sure you tick Show Hidden Files and Folders in the Control's Panels Folder Options else you won't see the AppData folder

I think you don't need to change anything with your RAM, also it's my opinion to not upgrade lots of things because of unknown error.
And the 8500GT graphic card - it is a good card in quality and midrange in speed.
Some say the 8500GT is fast enough for maxed out FS, but that may be when people have no add-ons installed.

set the most important FS settings (except resolution of course) down to a very low level to see if it is a driver/system problem,
damaged hardware or just a slow part with not enough power.
If you get great framerates after that, you know that you need to replace the slowest part of your hardware.

I have an 8400M GT...I'm not too familiar with the 8500GT but I'm assuming it has to be better than mine...Either way, my card runs FS9 maxed out with 28GB worth of add-ons...
