Thanks

Wait for Jet Ranger to come about. He should be able to help you out seeing as he has been flying around in that monster for quite a while now...

Did someone call for me?

8-)
OK, I will take a look at what is going wrong, be back in a bit.
By "newbies guide" I take it you are talking about the videos? If so, those are only to take you through the basics. One suggestion I can make to you is to read up on the manual while I go take a look at this issue, as it will SEVERELY increase the realism of flying the bird. My grandfather was a 747Cl FE, as well, so that's another 1up.
I will start cold and dark, going through the steps in the videos only, and see if that might be a factor.
I have a fleeting feeling this might have something to do with battery power, by the way...

I havnt read the manual yet for the 747-200, though ive been flying it lots as of late using experience from other airliners.

Can't be a battery problem, the engines charge the battery...
Once you've got the plane started, make sure there are no lights on in the engine electrical panel, cancel your external power, and shut down the APU (close the bleed air first). The engines should be supplying all your electrical needs at this point, and make sure the SSB (split system breaker) is closed. Also, don't fiddle around with the AC packs too much after engine startup, as switching them on and off in a rapid period of time can cause an engine overload. Ensure galley power is on, and I think this might be getting you: make sure the engine bleed air valves and isolation valves are ALWAYS OPEN, those engines need that duct pressure in order to run correctly. If this plane was programmed correctly, the engines will not start at all unless you have at least 45 PSI of duct pressure.
To turn all the lights off on the electrics panel, close the four red lids that will cover four switches, that will connect the CSD (constant speed drive) then flip all the switches above them, up to the Bus tie switches, to "close," and close the SSB. The engines are now supplying all aircraft power. And as rocket boy said, make sure only the 4th engine generator is running at the time you are ready to start the rest.
BTW: the proper setup for the fuel panel for engine start is: all X-feed valves open and ONLY the #2 tank boost pumps should be on.
If the above information does not help, the try reinstalling the plane and see if that helps.

having too many generators on while starting will cause various problems (electrical loads and all)
shouldnt there be an APU+ext. power/generator switch to prevent this?
I think that you would start the engines running on APU power until all four engines are on and stabilized, then turn on generators and turn off the APU. I dont know the RFP 742 but this is (sort of) how it works on the PMDG 744.

That's actually the way I do it, myself. So far, no problems, so that is indeed an option.

I know the 742 is at least built for redundancy.

Once you have the engines running, you usually will want to close one of the packs to keep the engines from being starved of bleed air. They need that bleed air to run, and rocket bird hit the nail right on the head with his AC operations explanation. Packs 2 and 3 are what I use, but they can be alternated. Only use three if it is really necessary.

Yeah make sure that your BUS TIE's are in correct mode and that your DUCT PRES PSI is above 25 or something, and let the engines spool and warm up before switching to their GEN's. Also, did you turn on Engine Bleed?

I'm sorry but maybe I've simply misunderstood you.
A jet engine dont need bleed air to run. It needs it for ground start.
When the engine is up and running, it however PROVIDES bleed air if the associated valves are open, of course.
So a running engine will not require bleed air.
Bleed air is used for ground starts, the packs (Accronym of Pressurization and Air Conditioning Kits) and for thermal anti-ice
As for thread starters problem, I'm with Rocket Bird. Sounds like a fuel surge if the engines just stop running....

is realy important to read the manual, in the V2_AOM_Sec_2 page 64 is the Quick Engine Start guide

heading in now, I'll see what is going wrong.
I'll be comparing your start-up procedures to mine.
Be back soon.

OK, after an examination of your startup procedures, I find that YOU are doing nothing wrong, the AIRCRAFT is. Your aircraft has a fault in it. I'd suggest you replace the plane
here. Don't worry, it's free. If the problem persists, then, I really don't know what to say. :-X
