Auto-rudder...

Postby Wii » Wed Oct 03, 2007 10:43 am

Is there "auto-rudder" in FS9? If so, can you tell me how to activate it? If not, how do I change from land rudder to sky rudder. (I'm not sure of the correct terminology.)

It's under realism settings...The sky rudder and ground rudders are the same thing located on the vertical stabalizer of the aircraft ;)

Autorudder works by connecting the the rudder to the ailerons. This option is normally used only if you control the aircraft solely with the keyboard or use a joystick/controller without a separate rudder control.

There is no land rudder as such. In most cases the rudder control is used to steer the aircraft on the ground.

Correct, or airliner pilots use a nose wheel tiller to turn the aircraft at low speeds ;)

Best not to over-complicate things. We're talking about FS9 here. :P

The best idea would be to get a joystick with separate rudder control. IMHO

I have a joystick with a rudder on the stick. (twist it) Well, I was preparing for landing (last adjustments) (first landing) and I used the rudder and it flung the 737 to the side. So, I'll look for the autorudder. Oh, uh, I guess I should start using seperate brakes while taxing in FS9 huh? Flipped a 747 I guess you could say. 10knots with rudder control on ground is an OK speed, any more than that and your gonna tilt/flip.

You can't flip a 747...The tilt you are talking about is perfectly alright... :P

What irritates me about autorudder in FS9 is that it's allowable for aircraft that have no such capability.
You'll never learn to fly those types properly if you use autorudder. ;)
I let the autopilot control the rudder automatically when appropriate ("Otto" needs that; he's no pilot), but when I'm flying, the rudder belongs to me. ;D

As for differential braking on the ground with big jets, I wouldn't recommend it. Turn off the autorudder, use very small rudder inputs to steer, and slow down.. way down, until you get a better feel for steering.
Brakes are for stopping, ideally- I'm guilty of steering with brakes in real life and in FS9, but it's usually a sign you are doing something wrong, and it's bad for the brakes and tires.

Taxiing is where most FS9 models are very weak, IMHO... I wouldn't get too caught up in that, if I were you. ;)

Yeah, my stick is sensitive to the rudder and I need to adjust it a lil. I adjust rudder before landing and it throws my plane to the left and (on rare occasions) stalls.

My thought is that the BEST idea is to buy or build a set of rudder pedals with differential toe brakes.  ;)  For me, second best is a twist grip joystick.

best,

I have a twist grip joystick. I don't have rudder pedals in the budget right now. (New computer) soon
