geographic names for FS

HI!

I'm not a regular simulator pilot, being not familiarized with the astonishing number of add-ons available. There is one thing I find extremely poor in flight simulator: it's map view. Fs reproduces great part of world's airports and some of the interesting geographic features, but don't name them on the map. I would like to be able to fly learning location names, having access to contries and state's limits and so on. It is just a question of having a decent map presented. Is there any add-on available, so that a can have those information presented on the map... even if they are not represented on the 3d world.

Thank you.

damezzi,

Hi and welcome to SimV.

You know ... we get SO oriented to using JUST the computer that we tend to forget that there are physical references available also.  Even the best RW "glass cockpit" has paper information in it!   ;)  A good map or geographical atlas is a godsend, particularly for VFR flight.  While the default scenery is not too good for adhering to real world VFR navigation....some of the photographic scenery packages available make modeling RW type VRF nav a possibility.

I am lucky enought to fly in a full scale simpit.... and I always have a bunch of physical paper charts and references for the flight in there with me.  It adds an amazing level of immersion and realism if I have to look at the paper airprot diagram on the yoke itself to follow the taxiways and get to the right gate or runway, and maybe change the stacked up pages there to get the approach plate for Runway XX on top.  Ditto to reaching down and grabing a sectional chart to check position.  And add a real physical kneeboard to your leg and write down ATC instructions on it.

There are some payware add-ons that have geographical features references that can be popped up over the landscape as you fly.  There is another thread in this forum section in the past few days that asks about this same subject... and it has the name of that program.  There are also electronic versions of charts that can be imported into your kneeboard with the right modifications.

Look around a bit and you'll find a number of options.

best,

.......................john

FS9 in slew can show you the world, and keep pressing the minus - will locate for you. Then as already mentioned check out an Atlas with Lon and lat.

thank you!
But I really wanted to have a zoomable map in order not having to acquire a detailed chart for each region I want to pass through. As I said, I'm not a regular simulator pilot, so, sometimes I just want to sit down and fly without having to navigate seriously... I just want to be able to identify places names easily. Searching the internet I came through FSDiscover, which declares to have a database of more then 3 million places' names (rivers, mountains, cities, etc.). Does someone know it? Is it worth buying?

Abacus made a program that showed labels of some famous places as you flew by...I once saw it in the Payware Screenshots board...Forgot what it's called though :-/ :-/
