Well, certainly a lot could be said for whatever makes you happy.  For some, constantly tinkering with flight simulator is going to be part of their enjoyment of the product, just like some people spend more time working on a car than actually driving it.  One could argue that FS being open to further development by the community, a certain portion of the game is about tinkering with its overall function.

The amount of time that a person spends on adding or changing components of FS could vary over time as well.  There are times where I get the urge to add aircraft like crazy (usually after I have seen one somewhere that I just have to have . . . which then leads to adding a whole lot of other aircraft that I see in the downloads section that I happen across along the way).  Then maybe I will go several weeks just flying the default Cessna's.  I know for awhile I was continually trying to find better water and landscape add-ons.  I am pretty happy with the water now and the landscape add-on I have is fairly OK.  But, after so many hours of trying this or that add-on and then having to set everything back to normal when I didn't like it so much wore me out, and I went back to flying.  It all comes and goes.

I wouldn't worry to much about figuring out how your time gets divided up.  Just go with your own flow.  At most, ask yourself what it is about FS that you like the most and then do that the most.  Speaking of . . . time to go fly a plane!

Have fun!

I agree. FS is more than just flying from point A to point B. I spend a lot of sim time trying to get particular planes as good as it is possible to get freeware-wise. For example, I'm currently merging the new 707 with VC and George Carty's panel, and also updating my Posky A330/Ken Mitchell panel combination with a new freeware FMS that's being developed 'out there'. On top of this, I'm refining some co-pilot-type gauges, so the fun is more widespread than actually just flying.

None of the above, in the Poll, covered what I use the Simulator for...;)..!

After learning how to fly, and navigate the Sim Cessna Trainer aircraft successfully, and safely, over ten years ago, I now spend 99.9% of my time flying around various parts of the World every day in my General Aviation single and twin Piston Props, to discover, (with the aid of my relief Maps), more about the World!.. :)...!

I completed the type test for "Complex Aircraft" many years ago, so that tail-wheel conversion, constant speed props, retractable undercarriage, Radio Navigation, etc, types are well catered for, including VFR and IFR flights.

I occasionally build my own scenery, and slightly modify my aircraft, just to make my enjoyment of actually flying more enjoyable!

The test of a particular, interesting aircraft is occasionally carried out and then returned to its owner, but my Hangar only contains the couple of Aircraft which I regularly use on a daily basis, eg:
Microlight/Flexwing.
Cessna 150/152.
Cessna 182RG.
Beech Baron 58.

The above aircraft adequately meet all of my requirements... :)...!

Anything more is an overly expensive luxury!

I purchased the various Sims for the delights of "Flying", and that is exactly what I use them for...every day!.... :)...!

F....G-BPLF... 8-)...!

Most of the time I fly short hops around Washington State, Alaska or the Caribbean in one of my single engine props or I fly mid range hops for South Africa VA.

I used to take many screenshot but I discovered that others are much better than I am so I quite that. As for tinkering with the sim, I changed some settings as Nick N suggested and that is it.

Crash ;)

I use the sim a lot for testing my scenery, as I am in the process of making a payware airport. It's getting there. ;) I am starting to get back into flying a bit though. You have to take time to sit down and enjoy the scenery. :)

I spend most of my time in the sim testing my scenery,  and the rest working with gmax

I spend my time flying for fun, practicing to land 737-700, and for screenshots. 8-) I sometimes test addons.
