No real way to alter your current flight plan.
If your flying IFR you should have a 'select new ifr destination' option in the ATC window.Your taken to the flight planner. Set a new destination, click 'find route'. Edit to include a nearby waypoint and your altitude in the new flightplan. When asked if you want to be placed at departure airport say no.
When you return to the cockpit you get the option to 'request ifr clearance to selected destination.'

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.
