i was flying from hawaii to las vegas and about 1/4 into the flight the ATC stopped talking to me and my options went to either request flight following, open or create IFR,  and something else.    any idea?

It's probably a matter of you having accidentally canceled your IFR Flight Plan. That, or you having accidentally changed your COM1/COM2 channel (Whichever was active)

Maybe you weren't following ATC commands to the letter, maybe you were off course, or you thought you were flying at your assigned altitude when you're altimeter wasn't set correctly.

The other things that can cause this to happen is slewing for to long, or dragging your plane while in map view will make this happen all of the time. The other thing that can cause this is to change your SQUAK code ATC will call you a couple of times about this and if you do not respond they will cancel your ILS flight plan.
If you use slewing for to long you will wind up missing atc calls and your ils flight plan will be canceled. The same thing happens if you drag you plane in map view.
