Does having too many add-ons slow the sim?

Hi, noob question:

I sometimes read that if you have your FS9 stuffed with add-on scenery and planes and whatever then it slows down the sim in-game.

I thought this was rubbish, as you are only 'using' the plane and the scenery you are flying over, and the rest is untouched.
Then it occurred to me that maybe the hard drive has to search within the FS folder for files every nanosecond and the extra stuff 'get's in the way'.... is that possible?

Yes and no.  It slows down loading time when you first start the sim, but it doesn't affect performance.

I never noticed the sim getting slower because of many add-ons. I had my sim up to 20Gb before but it was as fast then as it is now (9Gb).

Crash ;)

There is no such a thing as too many add-ons. Yes, many planes might slow down initial load (both the sim itself and the planes list), like many sceneries might slow down the initial load of the simulated world, but in game there's no palpable difference (I'm up to over 24GB with no problems [knock on wood]). :)

Thanks for the feedback guys, that's what I thought too...I know it slows loading and starting the sim - but some people seem to think otherwise "I removed all my add-ons because the sim was becoming unplayable" is what I've read... but perhaps they meant the long loading times... oh well...

Thanks guys  :)

There is an exception to this rule, if you have FS on one HD and some add-ons on another one that will slow things down. Trust me 'cos I did this once ::)

:) Thank you Ozzy72. I am doing just that ! Will follow your example and move from C: to H: 300GB. Have a further comment on this, so I will be back.

:-/ So many of these in FS9 root dir? As follows>>>
Newscenery,cfg, Oldscenery.cfg, Scenery_iFSD110.cfg, Scenery_iFSD111.cfg, scenerycfg.FSTerain.000, Scenery.cfg.NL2000_backup, scenerystatus.dat, yyyy.cfg

Do we have any analysts please.  On my old FS9 setup I removed the above except >
scenerystatus.dat. FS9 afterwards loaded okay. So why so b.. many?

Have a go

Kind of Off Topic in this thread Fsflyer2, it's best to start new topic for a new question.

:D There you are then, most gratefull for the direction Dave3cu.
The file >yyyy.cfg is a question mark rearly? Inside it refers to time, and a number like 0000412.

Thanks everso

"like 0000412"? Is the Number 0000412 or something else? Also take a look at the file dates in the File Properties dialog. Maybe the creation date refers to a day when you installed a certain addon? Or does the modification date always change to the last time you ran FS2004? For such small files, it sometimes help to look at the hex values, but I guess that won't help here.

Generally, if you want to clean up AND be on the safe side, a good policy is to simply move the respective files completely OUT of the FS9 folder structure to another folder (like C:\SafeDelete) and see if FS9 or any add-ons miss it. If so, simply move it back.

Hey Guys, A good morning to you,

As I was reading , I noticed  "FSFLYER2" said he was moving his sim or add-ons from "C" to "H'.   I think that would put these add-ons or the sim onto another "platter" in the HD or onto a partition on "C" drive.   If this was to happen, "they" would be working slower as they would NOT be on the outer edge of the HD platter.   It's a matter of the speed the hard drive disk spins at. The outer edge rotates faster than the center .

Am I wrong in my thinking on this ?  Other input anyone ?

     Have a good one,  caveman
