Lining up (no ils)

hi all, looking for some advice on how to line up the heavy birds, i fly a lot around the north of Chie no ILS landing so i allow the control tower to guide me in, however it always send me yes in the right direction but never really lined up. I have to make a messy line up on finals that does'nt look very professional. is there any way to better the control tower??? or just how to ignor the control and line up better your self??

The tower can't perform the approach for you, ATC just sends you in the general direction of the airport and you have to line up with the runway yourself. Are you flying IFR? If you are, you can just cancel IFR and go VFR when you're close to your destiantion and navigate to the airport yourself. If the airfields you were flying to had ILS, then the approaches would be alot more realistic. But otherwise, you have nothing to help you line up other than rough guidance given by ATC and your own navigation. Remember that the ATC in FS is artificially intelligent and doesn't 'think' like an actual controller.

Remember that the runway number you are cleared for will give you a pretty good idea of the runway direction, just add a zero to the runway number given & that will be the heading to within 5 degree's either way, that should make the corrections on final quite easy to manage.

As soon as you can visually distinguish the departure end of the runway from the arrival end (and after you're on runway heading with the runway in front of you), line up and keep lined up by the departure end... NOT aim for the arrival end. You'll soon see your approaches "straighten" out..


EDIT:  almost forgot...  Master this stuff in a nice, slow, small 172 first  ;)

Most non ILS LANDINGS are what are referred to as a VISUAL APPROACH. And ATC will put you close to the run way but the odds are you will not be lined up at all. If your plane has a GPS gauge this can help out allot in lining up with the runway but you can be heading in the correct direction and still be left or right of the runway. 8-)
