Sound

Is there a way or reducing the impact sound has on the performance of fs9, apart from the sound settings menu, without getting a sound card.
When I turn of the sound with 'Q' I get a significant frame rate increase, and image stutters vanish.

This is something that's been bugging me for a while, but I never found a way round it.
Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers, Jon

You could try reducing DirectSound hardware acceleration. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812394/en-us?spid=1823&sid=global

Thanks for the advice - I'll try that later.

Isn't that exactly the same as what the Settings slider does when you move it off of "high"?

And Jon, in my serarch for many things "sound", I have found that this is an area that I have found FEW have expored very much.  A couple of Payware companies that specialize in sound sets, and a few freeware folks that put out soundsetrs.... but not much information posted about it all.  Certainly not like models, and air files, and panels, and stuff like that.  Questions about sound settings and configs and parameters in the sim typically get few answers.

There is room here for an on-line "specialist" to make a name for him/her self, methinks.   ;)

best,

There's a surefire way to put to zero the incidence of sounds on performances no matter the level of quality.

I've had a chance to try this out now, but I can't see that it makes any difference.  :(

a sound card is a nice move. Plus, with newer models, you can have 7.1 surround sound, which is fun. Al you really need is a basic card.

The reason I don't want to buy a sound card is that I'm going to uni in a couple of months and won't be able to use it.

Well, a sound card is an investment anyway, as you can re-use it tranquilly on the newest PC you're going to buy. It's quite cheap, unless you buy a professional one (and one of those are honestly wasted on FS). And for last, with a modest sound card you can throw away any concerns about sounds disrupting your flight experience.

And for last: mine was only a suggestion. ;)

One of the main reasons why I always us a cheap? PCI Sound card is to provide me with the D-Socket on the card, allowing me to plug in some of my old (non USB) Joysticks (for older games). and also to give me a MIDI In/Out socket for all my musical instruments.

Paul.... 8-)...!

I always found it quicker, and easier, to bung a cheap sound card into a PCI slot and connect to my Surround-Sound speakers, rather than fiddling about in BIOS and trying to get the on-board AC97 sound system to work....(which for some reason, I never could!)... :o...!
