I don't know if i'm doing my approach right, so can someone tell me when you should start putting down your flaps and landing gear or if there is a tutorial on approaches out there.

Read the Pilot Owners Handbook (POH) for your particular aircraft....

(Probably on your Knee-board?).

Yup, it tells exactly at what distance and what speed to put down the flaps and gear.
