Are you sure this is a 'major problem'?...or just normal forces that effect all a/c to one extent or another?
Some ideas:
When you first turn on the AP, with no directional hold (nav or hdg), you get 'wing leveler'. This does not apply any directional control to counter the forces trying to turn the a/c. Cross winds, prop effects, improper trims,

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.
