I did a search and found nothing about this and I hope this is the correct forum.

I am flying FS9 using a Saitek X52 controller.  Everything works fine except when taxiing or taking off the plane won't stay straight.  It wants to wander mostly to the left.  I have tried changing the null zone and changing the sensitivity with no improvement.  I assume, since I fly straight, that this is probably an inequality between the left and right brakes (???) and I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how to fix this.

I almost put this in the hardware forum but it didn't seem to fit there.

Hi. I suspect this is not a brake or hardware problem. In fact it's not a problem at all. What you describe is caused by the P-Factor, Torque & Gyro effects on prop-driven aircraft & most noticeable at high power settings used for take-off. This can be offset by careful use of opposite rudder. Alternatively, reduce the FS9 Aircraft Realism settings until you're more used to it

I think you need to tweak you settings (e.g. turn down your realism) or better yet learn how to use your rudder like a real pilot. You're getting torque from the prop(s) just like a real plane

aha!  Not being a real pilot I didn't realize this.  But it makes sense now that you've called it to my attention.  Thanks for the answers.  I'll play with it a bit and see if I can control it better.

In your realism settings you can incrementally increase things like torque so you can get a better feel for 'em all. Happy take-offs and even happier landings

I thought I had a problem untill I realised my drifting during take-off was due to the weather I chose to fly in.    I find I drift when I have weather settings other than clear weather or clear skies.   I think this is normal & I have to compensate for the wind force blowing me off course..

Prop torque has a tendancy to catch people out.

wyodeacon, sounds like your basic problem is that you're assuming that 'straight' controls produce 'straight' flight - and a 'straight' takeoff or landing run.

FS is more realistic than that! If torque or wind cause the aeroplane to veer, the answer is to apply a touch of rudder to correct. The essential skill is to 'look the aeroplane along,' fix your gaze on the centre-line and/or the end of the runway and use as much rudder as it takes to keep her straight.

Another thing that might help. Before takeoff, or any other time, pressing 'Shift-Z' will bring up wind direction (and other information) in red at the top of the screen. That'll give you advance warning of any crosswind. Keep pressing 'Shift-Z' to clear.

ive got an x52 also and have too noticed this problem, it is especially apparent to me when i start the flight from the runway, throttle straight off and it veers off (to the left i think). turn off num lock and hit 5 then turn num lock back on. That fixes the problem for me. Its as if even though the rudder is centralised on the joystick, the sim is thinking it is turned left. hmm anyway, what i mentioned before fixes it for me

the small thumb wheel with the clutch button inside of it controls the rudder by default(along with the twist) and if it isn't centered the rudder will flip to the side every couple of seconds. there is a detent at center for that wheel that it runs into when you hit center moving the wheel slowly. this can also be fixed by changing the assignment

I also have the same problem, and not only with props but with every single plane, and in all types of weather. As soon as I start the take off run all the planes steer to the left always!!!

Another thing...after I land I don't have any steering control, nothing??

Are you using also the same controller or another? What is your flight configuration? What plane were you using?

Remember that, unless you have pedals or a twist-handle joystick, you better select autocoordination inside the FS setup realism options or you'll never be able to steer on ground.
