Lear 45 question

Postby wyodeacon » Mon Mar 05, 2007 9:24 pm

I'm back with another question.
I just began flying the Lear 45 and I can't get the reverse thrust to work.  It sounds like it should (roar) but it's not reversing and I keep running off the runway.  Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

The default amount of actual reversing power in FS is quite low (usually around 20%). You must use the brakes as well, or you'll overrun the runway all the times.

If you want a more incisive braking effort from the reverser, a way to increase the amount of power FS gives in reverse exists. Download AirEd (software for the editing of files .AIR) and with it open the file .AIR of the plane which reverser you want to beef-up, search for the string "Reverse Thrust" and increase the number there, taking care that said number must remain negative (reverse thrust == negative thrust).

You can bring that value up to 100 to have a 100% max reverse throttle, but usually it really brings no benefits going over 60~70.

This of course applies to every plane capable of reverse thrust, not only the Lear and not only jet planes.

Thanks, that must be it.  I was hard on the brake but still take over 10,000 feet to stop.
Where do I get this Aired?  Is it on simvation and is that what it's called?

An obvious question is what speed you're landing at, wyodeacon? Landing speed shouldn't exceed say 135 knots in the Lear.

Two other suggestions are:-

1. Keep 'F2' pressed to increase reverse thrust, otherwise the engines will stay at 'Idle.' 'F1' to cancel once you're down to say 40 knots.

2. Also press '/' after landing to deploy the spoilers. '/' again to cancel.

My landing speed is close to that.  I haven't used the spoilers so I'll try it and see what happens.  I'll also program the F-2 settings into my X52 and try it to see if that helps.
Hey, thanks a lot.  I'm obviously still learning. :)

You could also beef up your braking by editing this in the aircraft cfg file.

[brakes]
parking_brake = 1       //Parking brake available
toe_brakes_scale = 1.2  //Brake scalar

Try changing the toe scale to 1.5 for a start & play with another number either up or down if you don't like the effect you get.     Don't forget to make a copy of the aircraft cfg before you alter things!!   My habit is to add  // before the number I change so I always know what the original was.  The computer can't read anything after the // you see!    What you'd get is eg:   = 1.5   //1.2  //Brake scalar
When the c**p hits the fan, get a tent.

The default Lear-45 I can easily land on the RWY 14 at KHVN (Tweed-New Haven) using full flaps, spoilers, reverse thrust, and about 150kt touchdown. That's a 3200 foot runway!

Did you by any chance, edit the .air file without realizing? Or replace it with something else that's completely different in terms of size?

Sounds like you cancelled the main autopilot but not the auto throttle.

Cheers,

How could he have used the reversers then?

He doesn't actually mention anywhere in this thread that he has managed to get the reversers working:

Now that I think more, It could also be that you aren't setting your throttles to idle. Reversers require idle throttles to work in FS9  ;)

Well I've just flown a circuit in the default Lear 45, came in at an approach speed of 125kias & used about 5000ft of the runway at the most - all I used to stop was flaps at 40 degrees & the reverse thrust to bring my speed down to 40kias before applying the brakes, no spoilers were used at all.

The Lear stopped with plenty of room to spare & I have made no adjustments to the flight model in fs, so I think you must be either leaving the autothrottle on, not idleing the engines before attempting to deploy the reversers as Isak922 pointed out or maybe you have a conflict between your controller & the 'F' buttons - I do sometimes as I have my X52 set to deploy the reversers below 20%, which can cause some problems if I leave the throttle at the 20% mark.

:)

As I stated earlier, upon landing I went to full off with my power and engaged the reverse thrust.  The engines spooled up and it sounded like I was getting reversal, but nothing was happening.  I even tried reverse when I was taxiing at about 20 knots and it didn't do a thing.  But I sounded like the reverse was working.

The reason I haven't posted my results is because I got so frustrated by this problem I just haven't flown for a few days.  I did try downloading another lear and flying it but I never got far enough to see if the reverse thrust was working.  Upon climb I experienced a porpoise of approximately -200' +250'.  It climbed, but very slowly.  When I hit about 26,000 feet it just wouldn't go any higher.  So . . . I gave up!  :-/

I am starting to wonder if maybe I have a problem with my program?  I have flown a Hawker 800 for some time and it was working great.  I may try it again and see if it's still flying ok or if I'm also having problems with it.  If I am, maybe I'll try uninstalling and re-installing the program to see if something has gotten messed up there.

I really appreciate all the answers.  You folks have a lot of knowledge and I'm learning a lot just reading the responses.  I'll try the Hawker and see what happens.  Then I'll let you know.  Thanks again.

I can only suggest you to try another plane. Maybe your default Lear is just crooked. Try and download another Lear, perhaps the one of Mike Stone, and try using that.

By the way, the default dynamics of the default Lear (and a lot of other default planes) are not really that good (it seems that in "the cross" they're better, but in FS9 they are not so good), so make yourself a free gift, go here and download the package with the corrected dynamics for the Lear and a lot of other planes planes (the site is in French, click on "telecharger").

Try using the Lear with the new dynamics too, and see how you like it.
