Another question about flight planning

Postby visualchaosfx » Wed Feb 14, 2007 4:18 pm

I was wondering if there is a map that I can download and print off that has all of the airports shown in the continental US or other countries and also includes all of the VOR's and Intersections? What I'd like to do on my lunch breaks is plot out the course that I want to take to a particular airport and then when I get home in the evening to relax, I can either input the data into the FMC manually or go to simroutes.com and create the plan from there and save and upload it to the FMC.

Have a look here: http://skyvector.com/

Not sure you'd be able to print off the charts very well, but they are still an excellent source of information.

Skyvector is a great source...
what I do is capture them with Irfanview, then piece them together with Paint. A little painstaking, but I now have about 1/3 of all US sectionals on my hard drive.  When planning a trip, I'll cut out and save a portion of a sectional that contains my intended course, then view the "strip" in another window or on a laptop.

I used to print them out, but man, that uses a lot of ink... and unlike a real sectional, you can't really mark it in pencil then erase it.

Another great thing is to either buy paper sectionals online (they're about $7 apiece), or world area charts (about the same price, but wider coverage although less detail)... OR:
Go to any FBO and ask if they have any out-of-date charts they are looking to get rid of. I have acquired a good pile of approach plates, IFR enroute charts, and VFR charts that way...if you ask nice, they might start setting them aside for you.
