Knots to mph: conversion factor is 1.15 (15%).  mph = nm/hr divided by 1.15.   nm/hr -= 1.15 x mph

a nautical mile is 6072 ft; it is the distance covefred by 1 minute of latitude on the Earth's surface. That it is still useful for navigation.

OOPS! - I typed to fast, got it backwards - mph = knots x 1.15, and knots = mph divided by 1.15.   (1.15 comes from 6072 ft divided by 5280 ft)
