i have installd/reinstalled FS9 a good 4 times now, and every time, it loads into the menu, then as soon as i go to fly, it crashes, even on the default flight.

anyone know how this can be fixed?

Hey John-

Not the most knowledgeable FS9 troubleshooter here, but I can try to help you...
First, some questions:
-Is this a fresh install? No add-ons of any kind? No "unauthorized" patches?
-Have you tried deleting the FS9. CFG at any point? sometimes that helps. It's in your Documents and Settings>User> Application Data> Microsoft Games> Flight Simulator 9 folder (or should be)... this is a configuration file that the program creates on the first install, and refers to on startup each time thereafter. If you delete it, that's OK, it will write it again on startup (without having to reinstall).
Deleting just the .cfg often fixes weird things like this, so try that before you reinstall again.
Also, be sure to make sure you uninstalled all of the program; having loose ends lying around can create problems, too. For more info on that, refer to the how-to with the program.

Beyond those possibilities, the only other thing I can think of is that your system is not ready to run FS9 for some reason. Check your hardware specs, virtual memory cache size, etc. against the MS recommendations.

Good luck! :)

Have you selected the "Render to Texture" option in the graphics menu ? That can be possible. It usually crashes while loading the flight without that option activated, if you have any DXT3 textures...

The option must be active.

When uninstalling FS9 to reinstall it soon after you should go in C:\documents and settings\"your login"\Application Data\Microsoft\ and delete the folder FS9 there lying. If you don't do this a re-installation of FS9 is doomed to inherit some if not all the old installation's problems.

Beware that the folder "Application Data" is a hidden one, to see it you have to set your windows properties so that the hidden files are displayed too.

I have noticed that when i had a slight problem (deleted the 172sp by mistake) and wouldnt load the menu, i reinstalled it and all of my add-ons were still there. I figured that if you say "Extract All Files" it means that even add-ons and maybe even software problems will be back in the next go around.

Its probably because you left behind some corrupted files that you inadvertantly installed.  Make sure that after uninstall you delete ALL FS9 files from the main folder (just delete or rename the main folder) and delete or rename the folder in Application Data.  THEN you should be good to go

You DO NOT need to completely uninstall an old FS to install a new one, just rename both folders and you can make a fresh install.  If you have 1.8GB to spare it would be great for backup, and if you had some stuff installed in the old instal that you want in the new you can just move it over ;)
