Transferring FS9 to another drive

My FS9 is on a 36G SATA Raptor and it is almost full. I have three other drives available with plenty of Gigs. What is the best way to transfer FS9 to another drive. Obviously I cannot load the software to another drive while I still have it in another. Do I back up FS9 files and folders, delete FS9 from its present (SATA) drive, install FS9 to the new drive and load back the appropriate downloads? What if I temporarily disable the SATA drive will I be abel to install FS9 to another drive?

You could try the old trick we used with FS2002 & other MS sims. Rename the FS9 folder to any other name, providing it's different. This is the quickest & easiest method of backing it up & will also hide it from the registry. Now insert the FS9 CDs & install it in the usual way to any location you wish. You can then transfer all your addons to the fresh install of FS9 from the old backed-up version before deleting what's left.

I haven't tried this with FS9 so can't say if it will work or not. It would be a good idea to find & delete fs9.cfg before trying to run the new install.

I'm not entirely sure if this will work, but try copying your FS folder across (COPY, don't move!) Then download that registry fixer from here and point it to the new location. Then try... If not, point it back to where your normal FS folder is, and try what Hagar suggested!

I agree with Alex.

I have four instances of FS9 on my 2 hard drives, each on a seperate logigal drive and I've not used
the intallation CD's since the first install.

I simply copied the entire file structure of the original install over to the new location.
I then renamed the root folers ( FS9_Clean, FS9_USA and FS9_Europe ). I also renamed the
FS9 EXE files to the same names as the root folders. Doing this allows each instance to have
it's own CFG files ( they are created the first time you run that :version" ).

As to the registry, I use a utility ( forget it's name ) to change the pointer to the FS9 install
that I want if some 3rd party installer or application really needs to know where FS9 is.
I almost always install new aircraft, scenery, etc to a TEMP directory and then move the
approriate files/folders to the FS9 instance that I want them in.

In my case, I also created "common" Addon Scenery, fsfsconv and Scenery folders on still
another logical drive and madethe approriate changes to CFG files and alias= statements.

So, I have FS9's spread all over the place, created by simply doing a "copy".
I have very little "payware" so the registry entry is not an issue for me.

I was able to install FS9 onto a new partition (aka new drive) because my pc crashed and corrupted an FS9 file. Fs9 wouldn't load and allowed me to reinstall so I took the opportunity to transfer it.
I saved a copy of the old cfg file and copied ver th a/c scenery etc. I had to reinstall a couple of airports that was all.
So if you can deliberatly corrupt FS9 putting it onto a new drive will be  easy!!!

Hagar:   As you said it's simple and quick. Followed your instruction to the "T". Didn't have to do anything with the FS9.cfg because it was in the Document and Settings already along with FSX. Now my next project is to format the SATA Raptor and transfer FSX to that one. My PC would've been obsolete by the time I max out on that one.

Thanks again.

Does what I need with a clik of the mouse and entry of the path.

That's a handy little utility. Is it just for FS9? I could do with something similar for FS2002.

It appears to be hardcoded for FS9. It's not that difficult to find the registry entries for FSxxxx.
Just do a search. I beleive they are all grouped together in the same key.
Look under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft  Games\Flight Simulator

You should find folders there named  10.0, 9.0 and 8.0 . ( I have FSX installed )
10.0 holds the path to FSX, 9.0 to FS9 and I assume 8.0 would be for FS2002

The entry to edit is the "EXE Path"

My congratulations on your getting that username, FighterPilot. You'd think it would have been snapped-up long ago.
