Hate to Ask

I really do, but I'm going to be lost if I don't... :-X

Since I will be reinstalling fs9 from fsx in the coming days, I'm searching around to find whatever I need to know.

I've downloaded airports, planes, textures, crack, whatever else. But theres a couple others if anyone could help with

First is the cfg file, I modifed the crap outta that thing when it was installed, but now I can't remember anything. Any quick advice on what to edit for fps, stuttering, draw distance (for the better).

Graphics card is an x800 pro. It handled FSX well...just not as I'd like. 2 gig, guess thats the info.

And the last question, since I've had a taste for FSX, I love the panels and whatnot. Is there a way to copy the panel over? I know the gauges can't be, but I assume the difference is just a textural one, and the gauges are in the same place.

Sorry for all the questions, but I need light to find my way back through the darkness of a reinstall...nice analogy eh?  ;)

Can't help you there, Cap'n. I have a question I hate to ask, as well. I just downloaded and unzipped an airplane. To install it, it says to extract all the folders to the FS9 root folder and various folders, files, et cetera will be automatically created. How do I extract all the folders to the FS9 root folder? The airplane is an SR-71A by Alphasim; it's on Page 126 of the Military Jets download pages. I have seen this same direction on many of the other planes I recently unzipped with IZarc (a great tool, by the way). Any help is appreciated.

For what it's worth my advice is to ignore all instructions to extract zipfiles direct to FS9. Extract them to a temp folder & install them manually in the usual way.

Take Hagar's advice and do not unzip anything int FS9 the best way to add anything to fs is to unzip into a temp folder them install manually.
Unless you can absolutely trust the designer knew what they were doing if you un zip straight into fs you are basically playing russian roullette. I do not know about you but I certainly would not play.
Trust us and NEVER unzip straight into FS.

Sound advice from the experts and it will be heeded. I still cannot put airplanes into FS without an auto-installer or something like it. It all comes down to not being able to open Windows Explorer in two windows on the same screen. How do I do this? I click Start and something else a few times, and it seems I just get the second screen directly on top of the first.

I downloaded an install creator but I have no idea how to use it. It says to specify your file path or directory or something. Well, I'm not sure of my file path or the  directory into which I want to put the planes. I feel so computer-illiterate. I need a hug...

You need to learn how to use Windows. If you click the centre icon at top right of an open window it will make the window smaller so you can see others behind it. There are view options to Cascade or Tile Windows from the taskbar right-click options or you can manually resize & position the windows in any way you wish. (The taskbar is the horizontal strip right at the bottom of your desktop.)

There is no correct way of doing this & everyone has their own methods that they find easiest. It's pefectly possible to install addons to FS using a single window in Explorer. May I suggest you read my Windows Basics & Working with Windows articles posted at my Lair (link in my sig). Set your Windows Explorer Folder Options like mine & I'm sure you will find all this much easier. If not it's simple enough to return to the default settings. Set Windows up to suit the way you work, not the way it thinks you want it to.

PS. I prefer the right-click Cut/Paste options rather than Drag & Drop for this job.

Um talk about hijacking?

Tchkinjiu, If you want I can send you a list of my CFG mods, I have pretty much every single one Ive ever read about.  Of course my settings arent perfect for you (or even me) but at least some of the mods are pretty general for anyone

You're quite correct. Rootbeer's problems would have been better in a separate topic. If I thought I could help with Tchkinjiu's queries I would certainly do so.

Haha, its all good, I got a chuckle out of it.  And Jakemaster, if it wouldn't be too much trouble, I'd love to see the changes that were made.   ;D
