Any other way to load scenery??

Postby igs942 » Sun Oct 29, 2006 12:28 pm

Hi all,

Is there another way to add new scenery other that adding it with the opening screen of FS9. Only asking as my game seems to only run now when I load the game without the opening screen?

Cheers

...when I load the game without the opening screen?

do you mean it automatically goes to the saved flights screen, if so i have an easy fix. If not then i'm no help

You could install new areas in the usual way then activate by manually editing Scenery.cfg in Notepad. It's not difficult but very easy to make a simple mistake. I think it might be better to fix your original problem with the opening screen.

One alternative is to paste the files direct to the Addon Scenery\scenery & texture subfolders. The new scenery should be activated next time you start FS9. I don''t recommend it.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Kind of FsNovice. When I load FS9 now it goes straight to the runway in my saved flight but I see no screen with saved flight selections.

Doug - it seems that to fix the problem I had before (where the sim just wouldn't load) I went into the config file and set the opening screen to not show. This is what Microsoft suggested on their website. I have tried to reinstall the game, reloaded from restore points on the PC but no luck. I reckon it may be conflicting with Explorer 7 which I have.

try changing this line in the fs9.cfg

SITUATION = "reference to file inserted here"

to just

SITUATION =

see if that works. if not i will take a further look for another CFG line

That may work temporarily but, i have an incling, once Fs9 is closed and restarted it would return to that problem

Have you tried deleting your FS9.cfg and then starting your sim? I know for some problems this is the easiest solution. FS9 will make a new, clean FS9.cfg the moment it starts.

..The usual way to BYPASS the selection screen is to open the fs9.cfg file and in the Start Up section change this line......SHOW_OPENING_SCREEN=1 into SHOW_OPENING_SCREEN=0.........this takes you to your default flight without stopping at the select screen.

The converse is true...if you want to HAVE the Selection  screen, make sure the line reads....   SHOW_OPENING_SCREEN=1

...That's if I understand correctly what you want to do...commoner;)

Ian. I found the Knowledge Base article you refer to. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837195/en-us
It does indeed cover disabling the start screen but only as a last resort after trying several other suggestions. I assume you tried all these in order. If FS9 was originally working correctly & you suddenly had the problem it should be possible to fix it providing you can isolate what caused it in the first place. This is not always so easy as it could be caused by something you wouldn't normally think of.

I've never had the problem for any length of time myself but in my experience this sort of bug is usually caused by something you did or an addon of some kind. For example, if files are missing from the default flight it might cause the sim not to load properly & lock up or CTD. In this case Crash's suggestion of deleting fs9.cfg is a good one as it returns the settings to default.

It's possible that IE7 is causing a conflict of some kind with FS9 but I haven't seen anyone else mention a problem with it.

Thanks for the help guys.

I have removed the fs9.cfg file and tried to run the game but am having no luck. As it should, when it's deleted the game creates a new default one which already has the opening screen set to 1. If I manually set this to 0 the game runs no probs but without the opening screen adding new scenery is a bit of a bum.

FsNovice - I removed all after the = sign and the game loads but without the opening screen. It's really strange cos I have reinstalled the game and have the same prob each time, as if there is something defective on the disk which keeps getting transferred to my PC. I ruled this out however by borrowing my dad's copy of FS9 and, yup, the same happens so I'm really stumped!

Again, thanks for the help.

One more try. When you reinstalled FS9 did you do a complete Uninstall first? This involves deleting all files & folders left after the Uninstall including those outside the FS9 root directory.

The M$ article mentions installing the FS9.1 update but you might already have that. If this doesn't help I'm stumped. Too many variables.

Tried that Doug. Removed all files when I uninstalled the game but still no luck. What's strange is that when I try to load the game with the Opening Screen set to run the game crashes and the only thing Microsoft can offer from the crash report is to install the 9.1 update which I already have, as if the system has never registered the update. Anyone know where on the screen I can see what version I am running?

Also Doug, I have tried the manual scenery load. Have copied the folders for the Kidlington Airport scenery to my scenery and texture folders but could you please run through how I manually activate it via the scenery.cfg file. What do I need to alter?

Thanks

Start FS9 & click Help/About on the menu bar. If you installed the update it should read Version 9.1.

Also Doug, I have tried the manual scenery load. Have copied the folders for the Kidlington Airport scenery to my scenery and texture folders but could you please run through how I manually activate it via the scenery.cfg file. What do I need to alter?

There's several methods of doing this.

The easiest would be to paste the BGL files into Addon Scenery\scenery & textures into Addon Scenery\texture. The Addon Scenery folder itself should be activated by default so the new files will be loaded the next time you start FS9. The biggest drawbacks are that the files will soon get mixed up & you have no control over the layer priority.

A better method is to add each new area separately in the conventional way. Most addon scenery comes already configured in a master folder containing Scenery & Texture subfolders. Let's suppose this folder is named Hagar Island. To install the new area paste the Hagar Island folder into the FS9\Addon Scenery folder. To activate it you will need to edit Scenery.cfg. (Make a backup copy of Scenery.cfg first in case of mistakes.)

Open it in Notepad & scroll to the bottom of the text. Now copy the last entry & paste it below itself. The last default entry is the Addon Scenery folder itself. The new entry is the part in blue in the following example.

[Area.038]
Title=Addon Scenery
Local=Addon Scenery
Layer=38
Active=TRUE
Required=FALSE
Remote=

[Area.039]
Title=Hagar Island
Local=Addon Scenery\Hagar Island
Layer=39
Active=TRUE
Required=FALSE
Remote=

This is the important part so please do it carefully. First renumber the new [Area.xxx] & Layer= entries to the next in sequence. The new Title= entry is the name that will display on the new menu entry in FS9. This can be almost anything you like but must be different to all other area names. The Local= entry is the exact path to the Hagar Island folder you installed in the Addon Scenery folder so FS9 can find it.

Exit Notepad saving changes. Now go & try it in FS9.

PS. Whichever method you use I suggest pasting any AFCAD BGL files into Addon Scenery\scenery.
