What is the industry average weight for a passenger with baggage for the US airlines?  I assume they have raised it each decade if my waist line is any indication.  Todd

175ish is generally used for pax weight, not sure about baggage.

how far are we flying? cross country baggage may weigh 50 lbs or more, the standard human male is 6'0" 170lbs    


if we are going down state, (or up state) we might have a 15-20lb bag,

if we're going to work, we may have 5-10lbs

Last time I flew (From JFK to RSW I believe (Ft Meyers Florida)) I weighed maybe 230ish then and had about 50 pounds of luggage (Had a joystick, some games, my PS2, and most of my clothes are fairly heavy)... I'd say a fair estimate would be between 200-300 pounds per person including luggage

Is it correct to say there is no average the industry uses to estimate weight on flights?  I had always assumed that pilots used an average passenger weight to help calculate fuel loads and max takeoff weights.  Todd

I use to be a load planner for delta and I can say that most airlines indeed use a standard baggage weight.
It has been a while but I think it is 12 lbs in summer and 15 in winter. The reason for the heavier winter weight is due to the coats one carries for winter. Size of the bag was not a factor unless it was a duffle bag or SEA bag then you used a hevier weight. These weights only apply to standard comerical flights. When you have a charter flight for The Jacksonville Jaguars or any other football or any sport team than You not only need to know the weight of each bag and each person, but  you have to know where in the plane they will sit. I am reasonbly certain that all airlines follw some kind of standard baggage weight. Now how many of you knew that a lot of the commerical airplanes have a weight gauge that lets them know how much weight is actually on the plane.
Of course it does not tell them where the weight is. They use a weight data record to tell them that. That is what I use to do, I had to know the bag count for each type of bag(local or connection) and what bin they were in. 10 min. before departure I would call the bag room for the bag count then enter the count into the computer and it would tell me whether or not the plane was in ballance or if it was over MTOW(MAX TAKEOFF WEIGHT). I also had to be able to calulate the weights manually incase of a power failure or if the computer went down. Trust me that is no picnick depending on the type of plane it could take you about 1/2 hour to come up with the weight data record, and that was if you were lucky.
You think Controllers have a streesfull job try load planning gauranteed to turn your hair grey and cause you to go bald if you stay to long.

Passenger weight.To convert aircraft passenger loads into weight loads, the number of passengers carried is multiplied by a factor representing the average weight of the passenger plus both normal baggage allowance and excess baggage. This conversion factor is left to the discretion of the operator. However, if no conversion factor is available, it is recommended that 90 kilograms be used. (See also passenger-tonne-kilometres performed.)
Passenger tonne-kilometres performed.   Passenger tonne-kilometres performed are obtained by applying a standard weight per passenger to the passenger-kilometres performed.   (See also passenger weight.)
Tonne-kilometres available.  A tonne-kilometre is available when one tonne of payload capacity is flown one kilometre.   Tonne-kilometres available equals the sum of the products obtained by multiplying the number of tonnes available for the carriage of revenue load (passengers, freight and mail) on each flight stage by the stage distance. (See also payload capacity.)
Tonne-kilometres performed.   A metric tonne of revenue load carried one kilometre.   Tonne-kilometres performed equals the sum of the product obtained by multiplying the number of total tonnes of revenue load (passengers, freight and mail) carried on each flight stage by the stage distance.
