Terrain Mesh Help1)

Hey guys, this isn't an appeal for technical help with terrain mesh, but rather a question to help me decide if I want to go ahead, bite the bullet, and install some of the freeware terrain mesh that's downloadable here on Simviation. I've held off doing this because I'm essentially afraid of the mismatched elevation data for airports, resulting in a number of airports on ridiculous "mesas" or in deep "holes" or "valleys", and stuff I've read about really silly, illogical "anomalies."

I've never really gotten a good idea of how pervasive this problem is. Anyone who uses the mesh, can you just comment for me on how often you see this sort of problem, and some of the other crazy, illogical problems with the mesh.

1) Are the mismatches and anomalies enough to be bothersome for you?

2) How often do you see something that's clearly "wrong"?

Thanks a bunch.

I have not downloaded that many mesh files but have run accross some with the problems you are talking about. Elevation miss match aircraft in bulidings and so forth. But I woulld not let that stop you from downloading mesh files. There are a lot of good ones out there as well.
The best thing you can do is to know the source of the mesh files and where they come from a well known designer or not. What I usually do before I install any mesh file is to back up my addon scenery folder first Since this is where you will put the mesh files. After I have installed the files I check them out to make sure they are what I want. If not then all you have to do is to over write the scenery with the backup you made that way nothing is lost.  8)

I have d/l'd and installed heaps of mesh and yes there are anomalies but my experience has been positive.

As suggested back up your files before anything.

I do a format every now and then to keep things honest but I have copied to disc all the good stuff(extra gauges, scenery, aircraft etc)so that when I reinstall I just copy it straight back into the the appropriate files in FS.

Go for it,your experience will be enhanced.

Shortly after installing FS9, on a flight to the Chicago area, I noticed Midway was sitting on its own plateau. ???  There were other "scenes" like that around Chicago, but that one really caought my attention.

I d'loaded free mesh for the entire area and it solved the problem.  I think it was from FS Genesis, but I'm not sure.  Check out the various sites for mesh and give them a try.  But, install and test only one at a time, that way if there's a problem, you'll know the cause and can remove the offending file.
