Lancair Legacy Questions

Yesterday I've downloaded Lancair Legacy and already I love it. Its fast, fun to fly, and it has got very good VC. During my flight I've noticed three problems:
1) Despite having fuel selector with only right and left positions plane seems to take fuel from both tanks simultaneously
2) When I change altitude propeller rpm also changes (on its own, without my help), at least according to the gauge
3) manifold pressure also changes with altitude

Since I've never flown real Legacy (I'm not even a pilot) I don't know if those are bugs in my downloaded file, problems with the simulated plane, or realisitc behavior, so I would really appreciate yours answers.

Hi

I too have this plane and it is one I like to fly often.
I can't say for #1
2 and 3. They will change as you increase or decrease alt. Also as you level from a climb. So this is quite normal.
You can adjust mixture and pitch for your alt and/or attitude. once you reach alt, reset everything.

Well there ya go . . . My guess is (if it's freeware) it was to involved to model the tank selection. As I recall, my DC-6B Mainliner is like that.

Yes, as the altitude increases the air density decreaces so there isn't as much air to suck in. This is when it's nice to have turbochargers! I used to run my Mooney squared (2500rpm with 25" MP) for fast cruise but anything over 10,000 ft. it was lucky to suck 19"

This is why the throttle has to be increased during climb to maintain the by-the-book prop RPM

I've noticed 2) and 3), because I was comparing Legacy and stock Mooney Bravo. I guess the difference is lack of turbocharger in Legacy.

f-lash, I'm a 'Legacy-lover' from way back - first downloaded it years ago but gave it up for a while because, fior some reason, it crashed FS every time I saved a flight; but that problem seems to be all sorted out now.

Quite simply, for me, it's the best-looking and best-performing prop single available on FS. And delightful to fly.

The problem of the boost dropping off in this aircraft type as you gain height is normal in FS and real life both. Most small props require full throttle AND fine pitch right through the climb-out. The Legacy is more powerful than that - you can afford to throttle back and drop the revs early on, but if you go really high (I tend to go up to 12,000 or so a lot!) you'll need the throttle pretty well wide open late in the climb.

The settings I'd recommend are:-

Climb - 500 feet/minute, 18.5" of boost, revs 2,500. Above 3,000 feet, start leaning the mixture; you should be able to get the EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) up to about 200 degrees early on, say 170 high up; and fuel flow down to about 11 gallons per hour. Keep checking the boost and opening the throttle as required (with the Legacy's unusual panel setup it's a good idea to use the VC while climbing out, so you can keep a constant eye on the engine instruments).

Cruise (economy) - 17.5" boost, 2,250 revs, mixture as required to hold max. EGT. That should give you around 225 knots and bring the fuel flow down to about 9.5 gph.

It should also give you a still-air range of up to 1,400nms. - which suits me as I tend to specialise in round-world trips, starting with crossing the Pacific!  :)

I've tried those settings, and they work pretty well, with one little exeption. During cruise i set 17.5", 2250 rpm, fuel flow is 9.1something gph, egt maxed (at 600 feet around 155) but my speed is 180 knots.
I've checked everything I could think of, all seems to be in order, nothing hangs out behind plane.  I've tried it with Clear Skies, at varoius altitudes (600 -9000), and nothing.
Maybe there were some changes to the .air file in Legacy2000v5, or I'm doing something else wrong.

Sorry, f-lash, sloppy writing on my part! I just put '225 knots' because that's my 'target' groundspeed on long high-altitude trips.

The important word is groundspeed, though, and I forgot to say so! '180 Indicated' and '225 true' are probably about the same speed at 12,000, because the ASI reads low in the thinner air higher up. You can get your groundspeed any time from the GPS (bottom left).

Heh, the more I know about Legacy the more I like it  ;D
