ATI Owners and FS9 FLICKERING FIX: UPDATE!!!

Postby NicksFXHouse » Fri Feb 10, 2006 12:54 am

===============================

UPDATE:

AN UPDATED METHOD OF GETTING RID OF THE FLICKERS FOR ATI CARDS IS LISTED ABOUT 8-9 POSTS DOWN THE LIST

IF THE DX OVERRIDE METHOD LISTED IN THIS FIRST POST DOES NOT WORK OR YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH IT, REFER TO THE METHOD OF ENABING THE HIDDEN SETTING: ADAPTIVE ANTI-ALIASING AND HIGH QUALITY AF MODE ABOUT 9 POSTS DOWN

Please note you MUST have the official ATI CAT 5.9 or higher drivers installed ( I am running the 6.1 official ATI drivers)

...mmm....Tried your fix but not working ...in fact it won't let the sim fire up. Gives the message.....Must close.........

You say save the edits but I only see the one change 0-4 Am I missing something here?.........

I must say it sounds like something I could do with . The sim will run if I don't edit the .ini file but no change to the quality or flickering.................commoner. ???

Nick,

As commoner found, the sim won't start with the amended .ini file. I have a humble Radeon 9200SE - but don't seem to get any flickering anyway..

Hmmmmmm....

Strange, no crashes here....

In lookiing over the issue.,. I do believe you MUST have the ATI official CCC Cat 5.9 or higher driver installed or the latest release of the Omega drivers

I found the best setting for FORCE MSAA was 4 on my system however you can change that back to 0 if you want. The only setting that must to be active is:

ForceAlphaToCoverage = 1

but as I said, it works better for me if ForceMSAAMode = 4 is set.

Sorry if it is not working for you...

This fix is for the shimmering and flickering trees, leaves and foliage ...and clarity of the overall image... it is not a fix for the buildings.

This fix was posted at AVSIM and a few other sites and it does work for me (ATI x800 AIW @ 540core - 585mem. It cuts down significantly the flicker from the AG trees, which I run AG @ 100% I run 4AA and 16AF with vertical refresh on.

... and as a side note, I understand the latest version of ATI Tray tools by ray adams http://www.guru3d.com/article/atitraytools/189/  allows you to enable ADAPTIVE AA as long as you have the CAT 5.9 or higher driver installed. You do not need the DX Override fix if you use Ray Adams tray tools enable A-AA feature. I am going to test this on my system and will post back results

Dont expect every tiny flicker to go away... HOWEVER

....I run FS9 with very high quality settings and the tree and ground flickers even at a mip detail setting of 4 has always been annoying as hell.. until now!!!

Mip in the SIM

I run the following ATI CCC driver settings

AA = 4
AF = 16 w/ High Quality AF enabled
Mip detail level 100%
Smart shader (none)
Catalyst AI = LOW
Vertical refresh, application preference (setting 2 on the slider)
Adaptive AA = enabled for Quality
