Umm..There is a MD-83 in FS 2004. But we can't fly it. I was searching the web and saw making the default MD-83 flyable. How do you do install it?

You can download plenty of aircraft from the downloads section here. Not sure what you mean exactly.

Hi Megatop.........It's an AI aircraft...not for flying..just eye candy for the Sim really....you could add a panel and get it flying but not worth the effort as there are many better MD 83s to download...commoner  ;)

Funny, someone else asked the same thing in the FS2002 board the other day, so I'll just copy over my reply....

I would highly suggest finding and downloading a  high quality version of the MD-80 instead of fiddling around with the default AI-only model.

To get the default AI model to be flyable, you need to download a program called 'AirEd' and switch the aircraft type from AI only. Next, you need to download and install a panel, and download and install a sound set. There is also no virtual cockpit.

IMO, it's not worth it. It would be much easier to find a high quality MD-80 at one of the file libraries than it would be to fiddle and tweak default AI model, which isn't that great quality in the first place

..mmm...as Esselbach says if you REALLY want to try it out, and that is one way to learn about these things, download the program Air Ed (google for it)..open the .air file (in the MD 83 folder which is in the main Aircraft folder of FS9.) and change the Aircraft type from 2 to 0 by clicking the Aircraft Type section and change the number to 0 then press Enter to do the change.

You could add a panel by merely copying and pasting one from another aircraft such as the 737 400 .....

It's fine as AI but not one to fly.....commoner

The easy way to find downloads on Simviation is to use the seach option. Type in : fs2004 md83 and other options can include md80, md82, md87, md88 and md90. If you are unfamiliar with downloading and installing aircraft check out Grump's Lair on the Simviation homepage.

Whatever you download for FS2004 always have a seperate directory/file outside of the game to put them in. For me I have a main download file with many sub-directories for different aircraft, sounds, panels, etc.. Almost all downloads are zipped files that must be placed in specific locations. Some downloads have automatic installers but don't count on it. The AVSIM website also has a large collection of SGA MD-8x aircraft.

Some painters can really test you. All they will do is give you an aircraft texture & minimal supporting documentation. Developers can release aircraft in a multiple of generations that may use different models or .air files. You are sometimes left to try and figure it out the specifics yourself. These mistery textures have a high factor and are best usually avoided.

I would recommend SGA models....though not supported by any one...they are excellent quality and really nicely done overall

I agree with Ashar, stick with SGA for the MD-8x's and their entire DC-9's (10-50) series. Many different examples at Simviation and AVSIM. I am truly amazed how many painters out there willing to put in the time for really difficult liveries (like the Malaysian Airlines b747-400 - Lotus livery). I guess the real kudos goes to the aftermarket aircraft designer. SGA, OpenSky, IFDG, Mike Stone & many others. I could not image flying in stock FS2004  ::).
