Frozen Water

Postby Mobius » Sun Jan 15, 2006 6:29 pm

I was wondering if there was any way to get frozen water, other than putting a glass full of it in the freezer? ;D ;)

By default, no.

There are 2 scenery packages that do offer frozen water. In both cases it is not a menu select or seasonal change, but rather you must run a batch file that swaps out the necessary files.

The 'frozen' effect is only within the scenery area covered. (Though when I tried out Finnice, lakes world wide were white but only hardened in the coverage area)

Finnice 1.0 (freeware)-http://fisd.fsnordic.net/site/?page_id=2

Misty Fjords by Holger Sandmann (payware)-http://www.fsaddon.com/

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

Head up to the Arctic Circle. You'll see some ice there. :)

I saw one file at Avsim .It is in Avsim Library . Hot files for yesterday.  Ice texture for lakes and rivers.  It will only work with  Default Textures

I saw one file at Avsim.....

.....It also only replaces the texture, making lakes/rivers (worldwide) look frozen but not 'hardened' for landing.

This limitation occurs, (I believe) because, although you can change the 'look' of the water worldwide, to 'harden' the surface requires changing the 'class' of each body of water from, 'water' to 'land', a daunting task to say the least.

As I mentioned above, only the textures are changed

From the fs9ice.zip\ readme.txt:
....This package will allow you to switch all inland water textures to look like frozen water and back to open water very easily.
This is a texture swap only so there are somethings you need to be aware of. These are:

1. The water textures swapped are worldwide so that means that once you have the ice textures installed ice will be shown on
inland waters worldwide.  So if you are flying in North Dakota in December just swap the ice textures in.  If you are
flying over Mexico in December you need to swap the textures back to water or it will look pretty funny.

2. You cannot land on the ice.  Changing that is beyond my skill level.  Although the water will look frozen it will behave
  like regular water.......

Haha tell Egypt that!

Have you downloaded the new LIRF airport from ISDProject this week?

I did 2 days ago on LIMC and LIRF and I have to say they're amazing!
