I have an GeForce FX5500 and I want to know what the best frame rate is. I have no idea what it should be so any help is great!

I have mine set to unlimited. That way when I fly over water or less-dense populated areas it's not so jerkey.

I don't quite know what you mean by "the best frame rate", but I assume how many frames per second is the fastest? I'd say that you could actually tell the visibile difference to is 40-50.

The human visual cortex can only percieve on the average of up to 24 FPS.  The standard motion picture or video speed is 24 FPS.  Any more than that and we can't really tell the difference.  Any less and we can, particularly if less than say 20 FPS.  Now, to have a system that gives very high frame rates of up  into the 40's or more under a relatively light load is a good thing because that means performance to spare under high demand rendering conditions such as large cities, busy international airports, or extremely mountianous regions or if desiring to fly a complex commercial add-on aircraft or high resolution terrain and scenery add-ons.  Basically what you should look for is a performance blance that keeps your sim smooth, ie: no jerks stutters, or hesitation.  It's not very noticeable if you are only getting say 20FPS but the performance is smooth with no stutters or hangs

Lock it at 30. You cant see higher than 25 and locking it at 30 ensures that it doesnt fall below the latter if you have the hardware to support it.
On my old computer which was kind of the caliber that yours is I set it to unlimited though.

Whats the point in making your pc work harder by setting your FPS to unlimited?? No point in making your pc slog it's guts out if you aren't physically capable of noticing the difference is there.

Lock it at 30 & have done with it I say.

The 24 fps rule relates to film projection, where a shutter opens and closes with each passing frame... that technology was based on the limits of the eye/brain when looking at rapidly flickering images interspersed with black "frames".
I don't know what the limit is for digital graphics, but the frames come and go in a very different manner; I believe the human limit for perceiving individual frames is somewhat higher for digital graphics.
